I am building some local business directories-making them kind of Yelp-like, but local city-I am considering mounting a promotion using flyers in the local community newspaper, which runs local biz listing also, but is less used these days i believe. I am seeking good cheap and effective ways to market the benefits of local biz registering on the directory-SEO, local rankings and of course local searches-anyone got a killer strategy?

I've been looking into this, too, and have been researching how to import business listings into the directory. After doing that, i was going to create a facebook page, g+ page and twitter account to start following and interacting with the locals. If the directory is offering something useful to the customers of those businesses, traffic will come and then local business owners should be interested.

I ws also thinking of sending an info sheet to local business groups, BIA, chamber of commerce, etc. and ask them to inform their members of their existing listings and advise them to claim them. Of course you'd have to create their listings first. But that's not too hard with the help of a VA.

Still trying to figure out how to monetize it.
