Best Way to Advertise a New Site?

What is the best way to get a new website off the ground? I would prefer to use free methods because I think they are actually more effective anyways. I have a Facebook and Twitter account to help advertise the website. What other ways help bring traffic? I've looked around at advertising services but they all seem like scams to me. These forum posting services don't really do much good. They give you a forum profile backlink that has no traffic. I don't mind doing the work and posting up links on other websites, but I want to make sure I'm doing the right kind of work. Any tips would be good.

I think you should maintain the following ways -
    1. Try to update you websites by new posts or articles regularly.
    2. Update posts with a good description in social networking sites like facebook, twitter etc.
    3. Backlink of your every page in different social bookmarking sites, forums, blogs and other possible sites.

SMO is the best option and apart from that you can also go with some SEO techniques like Blog posting, Article posting & directory as well.

What is it your offering/selling and the problems you fix/address?

Depending on how expensive clicks are in your industry, I would highly recommend PPC your not going to get more targeted traffic anywhere else, its instant traffic and you can use the data to plan your SEO strategy.

Just make your campaign super targeted and depending on traffic volume consider using only exact match keywords, if traffic volume is low at the very least use modified broad match and make good use of negative keywords.

I'm also wondering who you are trying to get traffic from. If you want to go the free route and I would until you have a way to monetize the site and tested your conversions.

You want the know the math on how much a visitor is worth before you invest a ton in paid traffic.

I'd do guest post, YT videos, pdf sharing sites, slide sharing sites, read a bunch of post here on WF about driving blog traffic

Ton of ways to do it.

I prefer to start with PPC which gives quick results, and then parallel start your SEO and rank the keywords, which might take a bit of time but it brings in long term benefits and help to lower your PPC cost in long run.

I would agree with most of the replies here particularly with you wanting it to be free.

Best thing for you to think about... how do you discover new websites? Is it only through Google searches? Do you click on paid ads? Do you visit from social media sites? Do you click on forum profile links?

Most of us are pretty typical users... if you can't ever see yourself finding your website using a method, it probably isn't the best method for you at this moment.

Are there exceptions? Yes, of course.

The most important is to do three things: create content, promote it, measure results. The most popular ways to promote your site is to submit it to directories, post announcements on forums and PR websites, use social bookmarking websites, apply PPC, e-mail marketing and social networking. If you want free method, you should use Youtube (create valuable videos and must be consistent) and use social media to introduce your site, or publish pdf at scribd and slideshare

I'm not too into siding with the free methods in all honesty.

With that said my favoured method is PPC and I'm not a great Google fan neither!

Sometimes you just need to go with what works however.
