What do you mean with main website? Are you referring to a standard HTML website or rather Wordpress.com vs. hosting it on your own domain?

That's right. You can host wordpress under your own domain.

Which one are you referring? The free wordpress?

Wordpress is a hosted website with your own domain.

You register a domain-name, buy hosting (or use free hosting), install wordpress software on it, and build your website using the wordpress content management system.

(There's also - completely different thing - wordpress.com, which is a free hosting service for a limited range of pre-installed personal blogs only - nothing commerical/promotional, no monetization allowed at all, no affiliate links, no traffic-generation to other sites, no marketing, no businesses: it's for "hobby bloggers" only.)

Not quite following your question here. Wordpress can be used as a "main website".

That being said, I don't think either is really "better". Its all situational, and its going to depend on the project.

I like using Joomla! as well. Is that what you mean?

EDIT. I think she is asking if she should use the free WORDPRESS Blog or host her own.

Host your own. Get away from the free wordpress account.

I hope that helps if thats what you mean

If you're looking into establishing a Wordpress based website and the question is whether or not to use Wordpress.com's free platform or self host your own Wordpress blog, the answer is the latter.

When you self host, all your content is on a server under your direct control.

Using the free Wordpress.com platform places all your content under their control for them to do with what they please.

Not a good idea if you're trying to build a web business.

Also for branding purposes Yourdomain.com looks much better than Yourdomain.wordpress.com.

Definitely go with the self hosted option...

I would say trying to stay clear of the free wordpress.yourblog as this looks unprofessional. Its really easy to set up you just need to get some hosting which isnt much probably $8 per month. If you need help setting it up let me know and I can help you with that. You will need to create a MYSQL database to do it.

What a lot of people dont realise is that you can actually set up a really impressive business website with wordpress that looks very professional and doesnt look related to wordpress at all.
