What Offline Markets Can Benefit Most From Social Media Marketing?

I have been thinking about this all day so why not ask.. 'My first post so be nice '

Social media marketing is what a lot of people are excited about in the offline world but im not sure it works well in all markets e.g plumbing, gardening why would a plumber need a twitter page for instance? i think it would work really well in other areas though, for example night clubs, bars, restaurants. what other markets do you guys think social media marketing really excels in?

  • great question. My dad has a commercial insurance agency and I am trying to connect the dots on how social media could help his agency or any other internet marketing techniques. the main thing he needs is getting in the door of new companies to quote their insurance, its a very competitive industry and it is hard to get in the door a lot of times but many businesses shop their insurance each year at a certain time to see if they can get a lower price... i'd be interested to hear any advice or possibilities that might pop up in some pro marketers minds here in this forum.

Actually, any BtoC business benefits. The biggest benefit is to establish and maintain brand recognition, not sales however lots of local businesses (which I imagine is what you are aiming at) use it to get people through their doors with coupons (pizza, service stations, restaurants, night clubs, etc.) They also benefit from SMS text marketing so you can sell packages instead of single services. I sell strategies, not services. The services needed are defined by the strategy, and the strategy always involved social media marketing.

^^^ I kind of agree, but I would say "most" B2C could use it, not "any" - the OP is right, plumbers, daycares, dentists...don't really need social media - and there are countless other niches that don't. Trust me, I call lists all day and it's my job to identify those that don't use/need it.

Niches that do need it (some are obvious):
    restaurants/sandwhich shops/bars
    night clubs
    dog groomers
jewelry stores (not a huge niche)
    clothing stores
    spas/hair salons
    nail salons
boutiques (jewelry, purses, clothing, kids, consignment)

Any of those can use it for SOMETHING whether that is contests, coupons, reminders, sharing pics (to lure customers in with goods/new arrivals), sales...many reasons.

It your niche is people, your business could benefit from social media. Any business could benefit from it. Put the effort in and it'll be worth it.

Most businesses treat social "media" like a megaphone, not a telephone. It's a channel to listen to people. Building a tribe of followers/fans is what's its all about. Make it about being social, not selling.

In terms of how important, I would start the ranking from any business that needs to market itself to people to a business that really requires a lot of personality.

You'd be right about plumbers not needing social but for gardening, I have second thoughts. I mean, it's more of an art form for one thing. People forget the feature of social media that allows everyone to form groups centered around common interests. (In this case, a social group for gardeners can be a good idea.)

I'd also like to second the post that says it's a good way to listen to your consumer market in a broader sense. Sometimes you don't even have to interact directly all the time and get enough feedback just by watching customers discuss (or even argue). You see this a lot in hobby and fashion markets.
