What to Charge for a local mailing campaign

My partner and I have put together a local mailing campaign for a local gym. We generated a targeted list from infofree.com for them and broke it down by age, income, location, etc.

The client is going to provide the design and handle the print costs separately.

We're wondering what an appropriate fee would be for us to generate the list and handle the mailing?

Thanks.

It's going to depend on the size of the mailing, are you using EDDM?

hence the "we generated a targeted list" suggests that he is not using EDDM. I would highly suggest that you do use EDDM it is much cheaper then using targeted lists and postage is WAY cheaper.

They would like to do a more targeted list than you can do with EDDM. Believe me, I was hoping I could sell them on the idea of doing a location based mailer, but they wanted to target a specific income range.

I'm now thinking we are going to have to handle the printing side of things as I do not want to give the list over to the client for obvious reasons.

If we don't print the addresses directly on the postcards, then we have to manually sticker them. I'm not into stickering 6,000 postcards. haha.

You can still do an income specific mailer with EDDM. It may not be 100% accurate, but you can target mail routes by income range.

Which one of you has the bulk mailing permit? You or the business owner? That will effect pricing too.

If they handle the design and print costs, then someone will need a bulk mailing permit to send out the target campaign at .22-.24 cents per postcard.

You might just want to look into EDDM if you don't have a mailing permit or don't have time to apply for one.

This is 100% legal if you have a bulk mailing permit or if you are using EDDM.

You don't even want to try to handle a bulk mailing yourself. You not only need a permit but you'd need to run the list against the National Change-of-address database to throw out known bad addresses, and have the list presorted in the carrier walk sequences. The weight would have to be calculated and you'd have to prepare everything for delivery to the usps bulk mail entry unit.

You need to use a mailing house that can provide the service for you. I do lots of targeted mail campaigns and provide lots of them for my clients, so here's my advice for pricing...

Break your pricing up into pieces, so that you can justify the price. Here's an example:

Printing (depends on card stock, finish, and size)
Postage (depends on size.... do NOT mark this up because they'll see it on the form 3602 postage verification if they ask for it).
    Inkjetting & presorting
    List acquisition
Mailing service fee (keep this low, like $20 per thousand pieces).

You should be able to get a good 70 to 80 cents per piece.

If you are talking about the things that you can make promotion via mailing in bulk. this is quite good and aggressive approach.
