Launching a Marketing Company - From Nothing to Clients in Three Cities in 12 Months

Hey guys,

Thought some of you would love to check this out.

Over the past year I've started my SEO agency from complete ground zero, to now about a dozen of clients in three different cities who pay per month ongoing ... indefinitely.

This is a fairly long post, detailing some successes, failures and lessons learned along the way. By no means am I a millionaire - In fact, I'm still just barely in existence & growing, but a lot of the mindset shifts I had in 2012 would be greatly beneficially for those of you just starting out.

let me know what you think.

This is fantastic information. I read every word of it!

I especially like how you described the transition between the guy who does it all to just a "project manager" role, as that describes where I am perfectly. It's definitely a work in process. Every step, from finding outsourced workers to trusting them with your valued clients - takes quite some time to get used to.

You are absolutely right that creating a seamless funnel from the initial contact with a prospective client to the actual payment collection is such a crucial step to building a successful offline marketing company. These tasks used to bog me down completely. Now I'm in the process of creating a custom solution that will do it all, because I find that although software exists for each specific process (for example, billing, proposals, or SEO reports), there's not one that does it all.

Once again thanks for your super insightful post!!

After getting a few lawyer clients, I started targeting mostly lawyers in various cities and areas of law. They seem to be accessible and commonly publish their emails on their sites.

So I focus on getting emails for 1)lawyers that are currently buying google ads or 2)lawyers that are on page 2-10 for their city's top keywords.

After that i send them a quick personalized email telling them that I'll get them on page 1 for free, and after they are page one I charge a monthly rate to maintain & build it up more. I also tell them I only work with 1 client per city per industry.

So far conversion rate = send about 80 of these emails, get a few inquiries, close 1 client at around $900 per month (after a few months of work, phone convos, etc.).

So yeah, put in the work I hate cold calling, but filtering first and talking to prospects that actually are interested in buying is great!

Great post. It resonated with me because I recently started my own business and it hasn't been off to a good start but your post was motivating to say the least. I'll definitely not give up because I know its worth it.

I had been doing it for about a year or so on my own websites ... plus had some mentoring from a couple friends who were making a lot of money from SEO. So I had a decent basis, I was making some money online, but I wasn't making a killing.

You should look into UberTransfers as a way to add value (more converted sales) to your clients while padding YOUR margins.
