This offline business owner gets it...very rare.

Got a letter, you know one of those things that get hand delivered in an envelope.

It was from a hire place where I hired a chainsaw to cut down a large tree for firewood.

It was a thank you letter signed by the owner and if I had
any issues, he asked to be contacted personally,
giving out his cell phone number.

Then offered a 10% discount if I take the letter in within the next 3 months.

He opted to invest about .95 cents into me rather than use email.

I liked it.

Best,
Ewen

Yes... the magic of sending gratitude via real mail!

It's what I do every day... I have the coolest little online
system that automates the whole thing for me.

Anyone who isn't sending thank you notes through the mail
is missing huge potential in customer retention and referrals.

IMO Thank you's are worthless if emailed. A phone call or real mail is the only way to make it seem real. If you can do both (and with high dollar sales you should) even better.

I see that sending an SMS and asking the recipient to bring their phone "in" is becoming more and more prevalent.

Its a bit like sending PROPOSALS now to win business.

Far too many simply attach a WORD DOCUMENT to an email and hope to stand out, and win the business, instead of sending it recorded delivery, special delivery or hand it in by courier or in person.

    ee me.

Back when I worked in finance, I would spend a bit of time before heading home to prepare hand-written notes for the banking clients I met with that day. Good hand writing and letter writing is a lost art and something I wish I were better at, because it makes such a difference.

I about passed out when I recently opened a bank account with a credit union earlier in the year and got a hand written thank you from the banker who opened my account.

That was nice and something I'll certainly remember, but they could do so much better if they stayed in touch more often and sent a birthday or some other cards throughout the year as the master, Joe Girard used to do.

    Thanks for the story Ewen!

The only physical thank you I have received in the last
10 years was when I started going to a new salon.

I did appreciate it. If I were them I would have included
a discount of the next visit, or a free product upon the
      next visit.

One sale doesn't always create a lifelong customer/client. Most
      businesses don't get that.
