What's the point in selling him a new service if you're not actually selling it. You're giving it away. If he doesn't want to pay for it he must not have a real need for it.

To the best of my knowledge the only way to send free SMS is through EMAIL to SMS service. To be honest I looked into this and only found out how unreliable it was so I didn't look any further (Most cell phone providers are blocking it due to spam).

Sure, you could use twitter to send messages via sms - just do a search - it's been discussed here in detail.

Honestly though, sms marketing is one of if not THE least expensive marketing tools out there, and if he's not willing to spend a penny or two to contact people who've signed up for his list, he's not the type of client I'd want as the "cheap" ones usually seem to be the most demanding.

So you have a customer that wants you to build a mobile website to capture phone #'s, then send SMS messages out to the list, AND they want to do it all that for free?

Why would you call that a "customer"? Sounds like a cheapskate to me. Run away.
