When I do cold calls to local businesses selling online services (mainly websites and website re-designs), my conversion rate is typically 2%. Lately I've been booking appointments for 1 out every 50 businesses I call. I'd say a little over half of my appointments sell (let's say 50% to be conservative) and therefore my conversion rate in terms of SALES is 1%.

Appointments - 1 out of every 50 businesses I call.
Closed Sales - 1 out of every 100 businesses I call end up making a purchase.

These are really good figures for me and it might be because of the fact that I have a really solid list right now. I'll post in awhile to see how my stats change. I try not to get too hung up on the numbers though - as long as I'm consistent and I keep reaching out to business owners I try not to concern myself with it too much. It's neat to think about sometimes, though.

1 % is the industry standard in sales. That's a great conversion rate. Going back to a post I created a few weeks ago, a conversion rate of 1 % would certainly allow a person to make 100K a year. 40 calls a day for five business days is 200 calls a week. 1000K x 2 clients = 2000 week x 52 weeks = 104,000. I would imagine if one could have such a conversion rate, finding time to build two sites a week should not be a problem. I would not even sleep if I could make that kind of money. I'm starting to cold call next Monday. We'll see. The thing that scares me the most is what's after I build the site. How long would I need to maintain it for? Would I charge maintenance fees?

Take a look at sitepoint.com (they used to and may still have a web business in a box), or some of the warriors web design business in a box offers. They cover services and pricing for services you can offer, and have contracts and forms you can adapt for your business needs.

(Personally, I don't like web designers who automatically charge $50 month for hosting. Yes if you want to or have have to get involved in hand holding through hosting issues. No if they can deal direct with a hosting company and they just need a basic hosting account. For a project I'm involved with now, just having the client open an account at wpengine.com looks like the best way to go for the "sitiation".)

I'm curious as to what you mean by a "really solid list right now"? Did you scrape it yourself or buy it from a list broker? Or is it focused on only certain niches? Or is it your second or third time through and you have culled out a bunch of dead wood?

And that is not to ignore the more important sentence that follows about consistency.

      Thanks,

      Mark

Thanks Jon, what's the source of your list?

You conversion rate is always going to be dependent on your marketing, prospects, and how warm the leads are. Have you considered purchasing qualified leads to improve your conversions?

I can typically schedule 4 meetings from 50 leads by cold calling and following up. Closing really varies on the niche. Best advice to you...sound like a nice guy that really wants to help their business, not sell anything.

Conversion from visits to calls/emails is about in the 10-20% range.Conversion to orders is a different story though
