Potential Customers Keywords Suck...

Hey guys, I have a potential customer

He want's his DIY website re-designed by a pro - me! He also wants it to rank well for his main keywords. The thing is he's given me a list of 10 keywords he wants to rank for but I just ran them through the kw tool & the results were ZIP - NADDA & ZILCHO! None of them gave any results at all.

Nothing in:
  • Broad
  • Exact or
  • Phrase
I've tried to find my own but come up with nothing either.

Obviously I'm going to be 100% genuine with the guy but I've never seen this before. I always manage to find something (local search) worth ranking for.

Has anyone else been in this situation & what did you do?

Also, IS Google's kw tool really all that accurate?

I have my doubts.

Sell him the website and get him ranked for the keywords he is asking for. It should be dead simple since there is no competition for these keywords. He will love you because you are giving him exactly what he is asking for.

Then, you can show him some better keywords (don't tell him that his are terrible) and sell him on those. Just say "Hey, look at these. They get a lot of searches" and show him the data. See if he wants to pay you to rank them.

Hey Dan thanks for your reply.

I don't really feel comfortable selling him on the keywords I know get 0 traffic.

The real point of my question/ thread was perhaps to find a better way to find more money keywords or more to the point find a more accurate keyword tool. I think Google's is biased! :/

I didn't mean to suggest you sell him something useless. Of course that is bad business.

My point was to go ahead and give him the keywords he wants, then upsell him on the better keywords.

I use Google and also Market Samurai for research.

        I would agree with Dan

get the job first and money in hand and overdeliver.. he will be happy because you gave him what he asked for

then as a bonus you did some additional traffic keywords that you also got ranked for

        its a win win.

but don't confuse him with anything more.. get the deal and get paid

then do your magic. and explain afterwards

        eddie

btw. I have found in many instances that when the google tool show zero traffic.. there is always some traffic just not enough to show in the tools..

I have found that google is just not accurate in local search numbers. On one of my sites that has 0 searches in all types get 74 visitors a month when I am ranked in 2nd place.

I guess I would give him what he wants. Just agree with him for now and get the deposit. As you build rapport you can start playing devil's advocate a little. The right thing to do is what is best for the customer, not what he thinks is best.

I would also like a better keyword research tool then Google. They're only willing to let us know so much otherwise Adwords competitors would screw them

I have been in that situation. I used exact and phrase match results. I don't get good keys. Most were below 1,000, worst - below 500, global clicks per month. And the competition? Most were high. Good thing, I have better results with broad matches. But it would have been better to get the exact and phrase match results. What I did, I tried to play with the keys I was searching for. I found some decent keys, but only a few of them.

I had this situation happened before where you are targeting small towns specially.. so What we did was target all the services and towns even if it didnt show any searches and they showing everywhere drove business.... Keep in mind that keyword tools aren't 100% accurate so the more keywords they show up for the better of course.. Like the previous commenter said, work on more keywords even if its free of charge so your client can have more chances of seeing a return and keep your services

Giving him what he wants first is a good idea but I'd like to add that you can also use it as an opportunity to ask what he wants. Maybe he's misinformed on his SEO facts. It happens to lot (first timers especially). On the other hand, maybe you will find an unexpected reason for why he wanted this particular set of keywords. You know never know until you ask for feedback.

I have a home security client and I'm. Going through the same thing. I found a solution and it's mostly to do with using google geo targeting.
