Would You Put Affiliate Links On A Local Business Website?

Hi Guys,

How does Google look upon affiliate links these days?

I'm building a local business website for someone who is a tradesman and installs a particular product. He has found affiliate products related to his trade that he can recommend to his customers.

My question is "Would it be harmful when ranking his website to include these affiliate links even if it provides what the customer wants"?

He will have a blog attached to his site which will be kept up to date with information about the product he installs. He plans to blog about all the different products and also provide a link (affiliate link) where the customer can buy these products.

I don't want to advise him to do this if it means I can't get him ranked well for his installation service which is the top priority.

Any advice much appreciated.

    Not harmful to rankings, but it takes some credibility away unless they are seamlessly integrated with redirect links under your domain.

      It is not harmful for ranking the site.
      The other way it will harm to your business as
      it will redirect your clients to your affiliate sites.

      Do you mean takes away credibility in the eyes of Google or customers?

      His customers would actually appreciate him directing them to where they can buy the item that he installs. Whilst he installs this product he doesn't supply it. His customers are always asking him where is the best place to source this product as we are in Australia and unlike overseas it's hard to get the range and prices here.

      That's why he thought directing them on his website to the best place to source it would be helpful but the company just happened to have an affiliate program.

      So how do you seamlessly integrate affiliate links under your domain?
      I'm not that familiar with affiliate links, do you mean using something like bit.ly?

      Also if you do redirects does that mean Google doesn't realise the link goes to an affiliate site or is it just so it looks better to customers?
