Mobile Websites: Who buys them?

I did a test voice broadcast yesterday to 100 locksmiths offering mobile websites. 1 wasn't a business, 1 said to take him off the list, 3 missed the call and called back, thinking I was a potential customer.

Of course this was just a test. Those are exactly the results I expected out of only 100.

To those of you who sling mobile sites: Who is most responsive and likely to buy?
What's a good price point? I was thinking $495, but I dunno.

I also had the idea to give them away for free, and charge $40/mo. hosting and maintenance.

What immediately springs to mind are locksmiths, plumbers, bars, restaurants, nail salons, hair salons, and mechanics.

I plan on doing at least 5k broadcasts later today. I'll post results.

Any advice is appreciated. I'm new to selling these things.

Mobile sites ... run as fast as you can. Maybe some people can sell them but there are a lot of hurdles to making money in this market. For example for wordpress there are now beautiful responsive themes = no need for anything else. If it's not wordpress but you're not the guy who built their site, good luck with the hassle and resistance you'll face. Most frameworks have their own solution now (which we used for 8 open cart e-commerce clients for example). People can also get mobile sites for free.

We now throw-in a mobile site as part of our website package. It's in the list of extras along with a Facebook page, a twitter account and guaranteed monthly traffic.

As for the people who write and sell WSOs about selling mobile: I hope they can look themselves in the eye when they are shaving in the morning.

I second most of this. What with downward pricing pressure, lack of features over wordpress mobilizers like obox, and existing designer relationships, you're better off finding another way to provide value to your market.

There are some quality WSOs concerning mobile, but they're packaged w/software and geared towards sms, email/qr lists, and the like. I'd focus in that area - mobile as a way to increase leads and engagement for your offline customers; not design.

Bahahahahahaha you so silly, wait until Google start to factor in mobile to their search results, then put your Wordpress (or other framework) mobile site against one of mine. Same for the free ones.

Speed, custom content, compatibility, conversion rates, I'd bet a site I could build in 20 minutes would slap yours all over the park, imagine if I put a week of effort in to it.

Run from mobile sites and ill keep selling them, 5 figures in December (my lowest month in the last 7).

You're "throwing in" some of the most valuable and wanted/needed services available right now, and leaving money on the table.

Mark, you want to sell mobile sites, make those 100 calls instead of broadcasting, and forget locksmiths, call every single restaurant in your area, tell them what you have and why they need it, you'll make sales.

I think this is why massiveray does so well. A mobile site isn't going to sell if all you do is say "x number of people are using their mobile to search for local businesses... blah blah blah"

Responsive design is definitely the future for most niches, but in the case of restaurants and other businesses where people really expect a different mobile experience, I think dedicated mobile pages will always be needed. The responsive themes I've used allow for mobile-specific custom CSS, but I think this is just the first step towards more built in customization.

    Anyway...

You need to show prospects a concrete system that uses the mobile site to make more money. It's a tool.

The best mobile-selling experience I had was making one for a local cafe that wanted to offer lunch catering to nearby businesses. There are a lot of tech companies around this cafe, and so I helped them get a flyer together with a QR code that they could post in the companies. I then made a unique mobile site to show off their prices and accept orders via a simple contact form. They've been making a killing with that little system.
