Confidential Note For The Business Owner

I really wish i saved this... but my desk was a mess and I threw out all the "swipe file" type stuff as I don't do a lot of direct mail or write much copy these days.

I have an office in a semi-affluent neighborhood in a medium sized office building. I came to the office this morning and there was a white envelope that was the shape of a greeting card (not a 8.5 x 11 format more square) note sitting right in front of my front door that said, "Confidential Note For The Business Owner" and it was real handwriting. I looked closely just to make sure it wasn't a font.

So now that i determined that it wasn't a font it made it through my mental spam filter and I opened it up. Once I opened it up there was a white index card on it with the same black marker type handwriting that said the person sending the letter was a business broker and he had someone interested in buying my business. He left his name and 800 number to call him back.

At first, since the outside was real handwriting i didn't inspect the inside too much i just took it for real handwriting so i assumed that there was really someone "watching" my business who wanted to discuss buying my business.

interesting i thought...

i sat there for a quick second and thought about whether or not i would even be willing to entertain selling the business as I've done so much hard work and feel that it's just now starting to get easy... as i was thinking i kept glancing down at the note and decided something was 'funny' about it.

Upon further inspection realized it was a handwriting font! I felt a little duped and immediately thought that i wouldn't do business with this broker since he tried to trick me. That was my immediate reaction but now as I type this i'm thinking "why not?" i mean this means he is smart enough to get his message into the decision makers hand, get the note opened and probably in most cases at least get a phone call where he has the opportunity to explain his services.

Wish i still had this. But at anycase i think the concept here is that he spent the time to hand write on the outside and then he could automate a bit more on the inside for scale because he'd already gotten past the initial "bs detection" process.

Just thought i'd share! Anyone get anything like this before?

yea he could so easily outsource getting folks to handwrite a couple hundred postcards. They wouldn't even have to be proficient in English because they'd just be copying the same thing over and over by hand!

But the reality is, most business owners probably don't have the "marketing eye" that you have, scanning for handwriting font, analyzing the package, etc...

I'd give him a call see if he'll tell you how well its working! You might learn something

My father has received a couple of them for someone wanting to purchase their home, also a refi letter. I had to take a double look too. If done right, the open factor is very high. The giveaway was the yellow lined paper the note was written on had a bit of a varnish finish to it, instead of the regular yellow lined pad paper flat finish.

I'd also use pastel colored envelopes like greeting cards.

Another great way is buy the preprinted cardboard fake express/priority envelopes. They almost always get opened.

Handwritten addresses on the outside are a must and have huge open factors.

I opened one of these myself recently. I knew it was fake but it was just so crazy looking I had to open it!
