What is a citation? and...

I was listening to a webinar and he said he can get a yellowpages (.com?) local citation -- even though he is not really a local brick and mortar biz.

I don't even know what a yp citation is.

Any clarification on this?

Thanks.

a citation is simply any mention of your business name, address, and phone number, on any page that google indexes. Similar to links, some citations have more authority than others.

The guy you're talking about must have some sort of way to game the system with fake addresses.

So, basically a citation is a listing, right?

I don't think it has to be.

It is like a backlink, somtime using a keyword but always includes a business contact info namely: Name, Address Phone.

Citations are a great way to boast rankings of Google Places listings!

Don't make a "Plan B" as it only distracts you from "Plan A"

Yes, but it doesn't have to be a URL link

    Citation
is a reference to the source of information used in your research. Any time you directly quote or paraphrase the essential elements of someone else's idea in your work, a citation should follow. Direct quotations should be surrounded by quotations marks and are generally used when the idea you want to capture is best expressed by the source. Paraphrasing involves rewording an essential idea from someone else's work, usually to either condense the point or to make it better fit your writing style.
Citations include identifying information about the source you used. For an article, that includes:-
    authors
    article title
publication information (journal title, date, volume, issue, pages)
    for an online resource
