Going to a trade show/expo

Howdy all -

Should be a great week for me, but wanted to run some questions by some pros. First, the background.

What I've got - I have built a hyperlocal directory in a small (12k) but affluent town that also has a bunch of 2nd homeowners.

The site is named mytowncontractors dot com and:
  • Is still less than 2 months old
  • Is already ranking ahead of BBB and other, more established, directory for 'contractors' keyword
  • Has appx 12-13 businesses already on the site

I DO NOT give free listings to businesses. What each business gets is their own PAGE on the wordpress based site with a clickable logo/image, all of their contact info, link to existing website, and a brief (100-300 word) write up on their business and why people should call them.

The only other links on their page are to the directory categories. No other ads or anything like that.

The other thing I'm offering is the ability to share information via the blog that is set up on the same site, with categories set up in the blog that are the exact same as the category pages that are set up for visitors to find businesses. Basically, all any business that joins has to do is write their own blog post or get me the information, and I will post for them, with their contact info included.

Now, the first month, they could get their annual page with blogging ability, for $200. One time introductory pricing. Through January, it's gone up to $250 annually, and, beginning Feb 1, it's $300 annually.

Like I said, already ranking above locally established sites for the general search term 'contractors', and rising some categories - custom home builders, landscape, kitchen and bath, etc.

So, here's what's going on...

I have signed up for a local real estate expo/trade show in 2 days. There will be 50 exhibitors ranging from me to local banks to local builders to mortgages to local tradesmen, etc. The real estate company putting on the event has mailed out 3000 direct mail flyers to homeowners in the area.

My question is...what the f#@k should I do!?

What can I give away? I've got an online marketing magazine type of thing that I thought I could print hardcopies and give to businesses who are attending.

What can I have for a giveaway to joe q public?

I will have candy...everyone loves candy at tradeshows.

I will by then have some biz cards, but I think I'm going to give a different size of biz card, or something. May be to late and to expensive to get refridge magnets or something like that.

Anyway, post is way to long, but just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what I should, or SHOULD NOT, do.

I do full websites for clients and not directory sites so my business is slightly different but the way I work trade shows is to gather contact information and possible leads. Its not to make sales on the spot.

I have someone else work my booth while I go and mingle with all the other exhibitors, get to know them, and gather their contact information to follow up with later. The actual visitors walking through usually don't give me many leads. They just grab as much free stuff from each table as they can. I get far more leads working the exhibitors with booths since they paid for a booth to gather more attention for their business which is the type of client I'm looking for.

At my booth I usually have a flat screen tv with a presentation running, materials on the table such as flyers and business cards, and a gimmick to try and get people's contact information. Example last business expo I had balloons set up on a cork board and darts. People gave their name and email and got to throw a dart to win a kiss. They thought they were getting a kiss from the girl working my booth What they got was a hershey's kiss. People appreciated the gimmick plus the loud balloon popping drew attention.

Giveaway's I just had a bowl of candy. It works to draw people in to your table. Like I said however my most productive leads was talking to the other exhibitors.

    • Thanks, Shane.

Yeah - my prospects are the other vendors, and other business folk that might not be vending but are at least stopping by (open to the public event).

In terms of Joe Q Public, it's just more of a branding opportunity, letting them know my site exists.

      Thanks for the ideas...

have your booth open, not a table in between you and the prospect. Stand in the aisle or front of your booth and engage.

Have a sign w/ a catchy phrase such as you would w/ an email subject line. "how xyz contractor boosted their business 78%" etc... Something results based for the business, not just "xyz internet marketing".

Maybe do a short questionaire for them to rate their own business in marketing. Obviously word the quiz for them to fail and to highlight your specialty

I can only tell you my experience.

Sell something. People are there to buy. Everyone else is taking orders, why not you? Put up a banner saying something like "Buyers Will Now Be Able To Find You Locally Online! Show Special Discount".

5 buyers are worth a thousand people eating your candy.

I've gone the "get leads, call later" route. I've also gone the "Make money now by selling" route. This is better.

Hand out flyers at the front of the booth. But that's just to get their attention. You need to be able to answer their questions there. Fill out forms there.

I really hope you do this. It's better.

  • Thanks, Claude. Yeah, I'm going to sell. It happens with the way the calendar falls that it's exactly 2 months to the day that I bought the domain.

The companies that are already on the site...I've told them that the price will go up the older it gets.

So, the price for a page is already set to go up on Friday, and this event is on Wednesday. I will be actively encouraging businesses to get signed up.
