Thought I would share an interesting tidbit that happened to me this week...

QUICK SUMMARY:
  1. One of my clients used MY business email as their GMail recovery email.
  2. GMail then started showing their users HIS name when I sent them email from my non-gmail domain.
  3. Don't use or let your clients use your business email for their accounts, even as a backup.

FULL DETAIL:

Client 1 (not his real name, lol) set up a new GMail account and passed that info to me so I could post some youtube vids for them. No biggie, right? He's only going to use it for the youtube account - he's got email @hisdomainname.com

A couple weeks later, Client 2 (totally unrelated/not connected) sends me an email and says "hey, why are you showing up as 'Client 1' in my address book. Are you some kind of secret agent?" (true story)

Client 2 uses Gmail and has had some user issues in the past, so I brushed it off and gave him some general email tips.

The sun rises and sets a few times, and Client 2 asks again why I'm showing up as a different name... I poke around a bit, but got busy with work and it wasn't critical, so I still think it's something on his end with his computer/email/user-error.

A few weeks pass... a buddy of mine (who is technical, so it's not a user-issue) responds to an email thread and says "hey man, we gotta talk about why you're showing up as 'Client 1' in my email.

What the heck?

I start digging, and there's a clear Gmail/Google connection here - Client 1's name is pretty unique, so it's not by accident.

I don't use gmail, so it's not that. It's gotta be pulling my business email somehow.

So, I logged on to Client 1's Gmail account and WHAM! He had used MY business email as the recovery email address, simply thinking that I would be able to help him if he lost access to his account.

Google had squirreled its way through its interconnected systems and was now associating MY business email with HIS name, so MY business email was displayed as HIS personal name in everyone's GMail accounts.

Mystery Solved.

No harm done in this case, but if you setup google accounts for your clients or they set them up for a project with you, don't use your email for the recovery account.

All success,

Gary

Wooo, that was pretty tough to follow but I think I got it...tell your client to use your email ONLY to contact you and NOTHING else, including as a back up email address, right?

It was sure a pain in the butt for me Chad... I mean, I'm digging, wasting my time, trying to find out why MY clients think I'm someone else...

      That's why I thought I would share.

      All success,

      Gary
