If You Buy Domains, This ICANN Petition Is Critical To You

I just read about this and know this new gTLD Program proposed by ICANN has the potential to wreak havoc for all of us who conduct any kind of business online.

Large Companies are Attempting to Takeover Top New Internet Names.

Like can you imagine Service Magic exclusively owning .plumber, .plumbing, .roofing, .roofer, .roof,. ADT exclusively owning .security, .alarm, or Google exclusiveily owning .books, .book, .research., researching or Amazon exclusively owning .deals, .discount, .bargains, .delivery, .cheap, .buy, .books (oh wait, in this example Google would already own the .book, extension) and not allowing any other companies allowed to use these extensions thus creating a closed generic domain system on the internet?

That is gist of the new proposal .

If ICANN allows closed generic TLDs to proceed, competition will suffer.

I urge you to please read and sign this petition. Only the largest companies in the world will own the virtual roads leading to their specific business categories.

You can find the petition over at change.org

It is pretty scary when you read more about this very small, elite group of people who once again make decisions for the unmonied.

I guess it's really business as usual. Unfortunately, most small online businesses won't really understand the effects.

Interesting. But I personally think .com, .net, .org will still remain strong in the close or distant future. Most browsers, devices and applications have shortcuts for easily accessing .com domains and such. When .mobi first came out years ago, the official registrar advertised it so hardly that most unaware webmasters believed that it would be the standard for mobile web soon that they made incredible investments into those domains. How many .mobi domains can you count that you know now?

this has been discussed also in 2011 i think and nothing happened in 2012...I think we should remain calm, there are a lot of factors that will deny this to happen

This may have some impacts, but .com, .net, and .org are going to be #1 for a long time.
