Picked up this new clients today to do a website redesign. By the looks of it i'd say his was done in 2003-2004ish. I did the whois, and got no information back on the people who registered the domain originally. What more can i do to find out these peoples information?

He'll need to keep the domain name, because it's a pretty good one.

Does he have control of the hosting and domain name?

If not he is likely paying a monthly fee and those are the people he needs to contact. Can't imagine they wouldn't be charging him for hosting if they are hosting it for him still.

If he is paying for hosting himself and renewing his domain himself I am not sure why you would need to find the old designers.

Well i figured out that my client probably had the hosting company or registrar set it up. So I called them and told them i had a new client who wanted me to work on his site. The client doesnt't remember who did it. So could you just confirm "Bob" is the name on the account. (And it was, so I lucked out). So the situation will be handled. Shoulda tried that first off.

Sometimes we over think things. If you call with confidence and show you know what you are talking about most people will help you. This is how hacking works in reality. It is more about human interactions vs. actual computer interactions.

I was actually just reading about 'Social Engineering' today. I started a new SAAS service (SMS Marketing related), and had someone phone the 1-800 saying they forgot their username and password and only new the clients business name. Bit of a problem, so now all new signups require phone number for account verification.
