I need advise with organic food products promotion

Hi, I am trying to help my wife take her organic food business to the next level both online and offline. My wife created and owns a private label of high end gourmet organic food products. being that her brand is fairly new and has not invested a large sum of money into marketing, she is currently having limited success with Amazon and with some local small gourmet stores. I would like your advice as to what else she can try knowing that her marketing budget still limited at the moment. She is willing to offer attractive commissions to anyone that may be able to help her increase her sales volume.

Thanks in advance.

Start out small going door to door, putting ads on craigslist, setting up shop at roadsides and picnic areas. Not a lot of people are going to buy an unknown brand on the internet unless it is from a reputable retailer.

Make some youtube videos explaining why these organic foods are good for you and post links to your website on yahoo answers and other forums.

A lot depends on her product production capabilities, how much product can she produce? How is she producing it? In a commercial catering kitchen, or at home. What kind of packaging is she using?

Production is not an issue. These are not homemade products, she works with small and medium size producers and packages under her own private label/brand. Packaging is sharp, environmentally friendly and based on initial feedback from other branding experts and consumers it is right mark. As I stated on my original post we have pretty good feedback regarding quality and taste as well. Her problem is now is getting the product out there faster that she has been, but without big marketing dollars this may take a while unless you have some pretty good budget ideas. Sorry I am not being a wise guy I'm just looking up to you guys for out of the box ideas you may have.

      Thanks again.

you need to hook up with a distributor or get in contact with a company like whole foods (if it's organic they love that $!!!*). There are some people on here that can test run your product in a few hundred stores and if it sells then they will launch you nationally.

Thanks for the reply. When you say there are a few people here that can test run your product in a few hundred stores .... what do you mean? I'm sorry I am trying to figure out if you mean that there are stores owners that hang out here or distributors or else. Thanks again for all your help.

Here is a list of organic food distributors:

    Organic Food Distributors

    List of organic food distributors

Unfi -- this is a larger distributor

You may want to also do a Google search for Natural Food Distributors

Wishing your wife lots of success.

Once gain thank you. My wife looked into UNFI and she is also a member of the OTA (Organic Trade Association) who also provided some additional contacts. The problem is that when you go with any of the big distributors like UNFI or Tree of Life while you are just starting is hard. The big guys want too many concessions which makes it difficult for small companies like my wife's to get in the game via the large distributor channel.

Just bringing the focus back, what I am really trying to figure out is how to help my wife market her product in a creative affordable way (mostly online). I think she needs to create the demand from the bottom up in order to be successful. As I said earlier if she were to get in the game via one of the large distributors like UNFI here is what I think are challenges:

      1) She has a great product and good packaging, however being a new brand most people have never heard of it just yet.
      2) By the nature of being a very exclusive high quality organic food product, the price point may be a bit higher than similar lower priced inferior quality products on her space. Consumer education as to why her price point is reasonable based on quality and exclusivity may be needed. I anticipate initial resistance based on point #1 above
      3) If she were to get into a large distributors like UNFI, they may put her product in a large number of stores. Problem would be that after a couple of month the stores and UNFI may be pretty unhappy when they potentially have no sales because of #1 and #2 above.

Based on the three points, my suggestion to her has been to first create the awareness via people I call influencers (foodies of the world, food bloggers, facebook pages focused on food with large number of followers, any celebrity she could send samples too, food magazine and Newspaper writers, etc). This would create the demand from the consumer side of the house (bottom up) rather than pushing it down to the consumer from the distributors and brokers of the world.

What I was looking for originally on this forum, (sorry I was not too clear) were ideas on what would be the best way to accomplish what I just described on the previous paragraph with a limited marketing budget.

For starters I have helped her creating a nice infographic that I hope may pay off by going viral and have reached out to some bloggers who were glad to review the product in exchange for some free samples. Many bloggers would not even considre as they are already pushing ads for the big guys and ad networks who have pretty much monopolized the space.

Once again I welcome anyone and thank you for any additional ideas you can share with me on this.

I don't know where you are, but do you have an inexpensive way to reach everybody in a given neighborhood, like US Postal Services' Door to door for $0.145?

Do you have a physical location where you can invite people to come to something akin to a wine tasting, where they get to sample products for free (or for money, but then you'd might have to have a local celebrity host)...

If you can make it sound like lots of fun, if some of the proceeds go to a popular charity, you can get mentioned in local news items, you can do your own press releases...

You'll have to locate a neighborhood with a lot of people who might go for organic... who already buy organic...

In my area, a lot of people who do yoga in certain neighborhoods are more into eating organic than other people. Maybe your wife can arrange cross promotions...

Or, maybe, she could offer to co-sponsor one of their events if they let her promote her stuff.

Find places like the Discovery Center of Chicago. Find someone who teaches a course like this one: 3310 GO RAW FOR A DAY : DISCOVER ASIAN FUSION (raw organic diet), or yoga classes and make friends with the instructors... Some of them have lists...your wife provides the food they teach on... Or, maybe, Or teach such a class... Or train people to teach on your behalf...

          All,

This is great information and I do thank you for your time and taking the time to research information and sharing it with me here. Based on time and money I think I go with the followgin suggestions:

          • Social Media Marketing
          • Write lots of articles about the product and distribute the articles to article directories.
          • Social Bookmarkiing
          • Post to the Mommy Blogs
          • Post to Women's Forums -- ivillage, the various sugar sites, etc. Do your research
          • Get Videos about the product done on Fiverr and post them to all of the video sites
          • Make the videos yourself.
          • Find a list of blogs you can run solo ads on inexpensively
          • Send samples to writers at your local weekly paper- ex. Riverfront Times, SF Weekly,etc.. You can find a nationwide list of them at aan.org
          • Send samples to your local media outlets, if you watch the news, you know that most of the stories they tell now are just Press Release pieces.
          • Researching Yoga and Holistic medicine instructors and experts that may already have a large number of followers.
          • Maybe same as above bullet, but find newsletters touching on the topic of organic food or organic living, vegan, gluten free and non GMO.
          • I also want to look further on the US Postal Service idea of door to door for $0.145. I am in New York and wonder how much it would be to target an entire zip code. Of course that would be after I do some research on the demographics. Just to see what zip codes may have the most organic foods consumers.
Not sure for those outside of New York, but Manhattan has an awesome library that has all sorts of data for research of demographics, etc. The library is called the Small Business Library and anyone can just walk in and use it. They have all sort of reports that you can put on a USB free to take. They have a great database on Census data and much more.

          Thanks again.

If you know your price point is too high, then you will have to figure out a way to lower it. Educating the consumer is also difficult when you have no marketing dollars. You have to figure out a way to appeal to consumers base desires, not what you think they should be, but what they are.

Have you thought about selling through local farmers markets? Perhaps finding vendors who will sell your product at their booths. What about reaching out to the gourmet food truck owners to have them sell the product?

You will have to get a list of independent health food stores nationwide and call them yourselves, and pound the pavement yourselves to get it into stores. Keep in mind, once you have some decent revenue, the better distributors will consider taking on your product. You have to show them you have put some serious effort into your own product first, in many cases.

    Affordable Marketing Methods

Remember, you'll either have to spend your money to get your marketing message out, or if you don't have much money you'll have to spend your time, lot's of it, hours of monotony.

Remember Fiverr is your friend to get some of these tasks done inexpensively, but you'll still have to do a lot of it yourself.

All of this is just guess work on my part, because I don't know what kind of organic food product it is.

Food trade shows are a great way. National Restaurant show in chicago in may, fancy food shows in NYC/SanFran generally, Retail grocer shows etc....

another angle is possibly home parties. Tastefully Simple I think now does close to 200 million a year selling specialty foods through home parties.

Contact specifically selected members of the local relevant press, local morning TV and radio shows..., any show that supports local business and food.

Contact local store managers for placement or at least sampling events, even national chains might give their managers some leeway.

Local restaurants that want organic ingedients and work with single sources.

Network with other local businesses and put together local business open houses
where they can each showcase their stuff. Furniture stores, clothing stores
and art galleries usually have the floor space and environment that is condusive
to this. Include massage therapists and the like as well as retail and professionals.

Offer local delivery. One organic food company here worked it out so they deliver all orders for that neighborhood to one house and then the customers come over to that house and pick up their pre-paid order. Obviously they resonated with people willing to pay premium for healthy food.

My company can help you with both online and offline, for organic food distro, but you would be best with a test for offline, we offer a $10 per store trial for your product and once we know your product sells we can get you into big box stores like Vitamin Shoppe, and whole foods,

it may not be what you can afford right now, as the minimum deal is a free fill for 200 stores, best to bookmark this post for future reference, or online marketing is unique to us, no other distributors are doing what we are doing, and all our new customers in the food and beverage industry are loving our method, its a no brainer for them, but again it involves a free fill

Beside on depend on Amazon, you can go for email marketing where you can blast to offline customers and get repeat purchase from them through online.
You can use social media to promote your products. You also can write a blog and turn the traffics to your buyer.
Create some video on how to cook organic foods or eating organic foods advantages,
or even share some real life story about organic foods help in health .
Lot of audience love to see those real life story and like to interact with you and lastly become your customers.
Go for foods forum to find your niche and build a group chat with them.

Well I have to say this is really helpful and has helped me consider new avenues I not previously considered.

I would like some clarification on the following if possible:

@NewParadign You are right about trade shows although they are kind of expensive. As a matter of fact she attended the Natural Products Expo East last September. It was a bit overwhelming and I am not sure if that was the right show. She is looking into the Fancy Food show in N.Y. this July, however it looks like to have a presence you must have two years of sales record. Since her products are fairly new, she would not qualify. I am working on it to see if there is a way although it is also going to be really expensive.

You also mentioned about Tastefully Simple and the home parties. I like that idea although I do not know how I would go about getting that started and make sure it gets traction. My guess would be start with the Moms Blogs and see from there, but sounds to me this avenue may require more effort than I can even imagine right now as opposed to some of the other options presented in this thread.

@bizgrower you mentiones to include massage therapists and the like as well as retail and professionals. I thought this may be a good avenue meaning the holistic medicine professionals and nutritionists, but I am not convinced about massage therapists as I do not see the connection between an organic food product and them. Can you please let me know if you see such a connection and how? Thanks so much.

@mikeb1 I see what you mean. This would make sense if it wasn't for the large number of stores she would need to provide with a free fill which is prohibite at this point in time. Just out of curiosity and for the future, how large of a free fill are we talking about? One case or more?

@YerrickYeoh when you are talking about email marketing2 sand a blast off to offline customers 1) where would you get such a targeted list of organic food consumers and 2) I definitely would not want to SPAM anyone so if you can elaborate, that would be much appreciated.

A general question to all of you is do you know of any forums or anyone that could help us find independent sales individuals full time or part time that would be willing to beat the pavement outside of our regional area (New York). The incentive would have to be based on sales commission, but I'm sure my wife could make this very attractive. My wife is ready to start beating the pavement locally in N.Y., but I think she needs to expand sand use other sale individuals help if she wants to grow her business quickly.

Thanks again to all of you for the great contributions to this thread.

@mrpopular777 - I was thinking in terms of making these business open houses appealing to the public. Who does not want a free or inexpensive sample of a shoulder massage? Also, I think legitimate massage therapists are likely to be into health and nutrition and their clientele would be interested in organic and have a budget. Next door to my business is a woman who is a licensed massage therapist/certified herbalist/certified yoga instructor.

Another thought would be to do these open houses with a focus on health and nutrition, rather than general. That way your wife could network with related businesses as well as interested and wealthy enough customers. A thing to keep in mind is that if you keep doing these open houses in the same geographic area, you get the same public and providers coming so you're not really expanding your market.

I suspect and hope JerrickYeoh is talking about email list building via blogging and marketing. List buying is spam and a lot of the emails are no longer any good and emails sent this way end up in the spam boxes anyway. Spam support ain't welcome on the WF. The other legit way to "email list blast" is via solo-ads on carefully chosen email lists that allow this.

Press releases would be another way to help your wife.

Targeted lists of buyers: look up yoga blogs, organic food blogs, Chinese massage blogs (acupuncture, etc.), healthy-cooking blogs. If they have an optin, they have a list.

Find out how much they want to send a message about your stuff to their list (solo ads).

A year ago, I went to an open house at a chiropractor's. They had a couple of people do mini-massages and showing 'tricks' and they had food. The food they bought from Dominicks (food chain that has a store in the same mall).

You could talk to a list broker, ask them for a list of people who subscribe to yoga or organic food magazines. If they have email addresses, get those, send emails, expect a lower response rate than with other means of reaching them.

It could have been someone like you...

At some of the open houses I go to, they have such arrangements. Someone brings the food (and is thanked in press releases and on the spot). Usually, they make the mistake of not having a way to get people to follow up with them.

I mean, if they're a restaurant, they just hand out menus... nothing to collect email addresses on the spot or to truly encourage people to visit them.

Yes. Orchestrate these open houses so local press is invited. Also, many local print newspapers and blogs have free announcement sections. And, many local tv and radio or local outlets of the major radio and tv networks have very active websites with a lot of ways to promote.

home parties have nearly zero startup cost, print a color flyer, biz cards, order form, contact friends/neighbors/family to have parties, give the hostess a % of the cut or discount on products. It's that simple. Use social media to expand your circle.

National food shows will cost a couple grand in travel/hotel/fees/product, target local/regional shows for a less expensive start.

Sales reps in that industry are generally called food brokers. It's real tough these days to get a broker to pioneer your line w/out charging you a retainer to get started. But if you have stellar products with a great need or could be competitive w/ other similar lines, a small broker would take you on and promote.

      A couple ideas to consider.

First is this online market Abes Market which is all for organic food. Might be a good place to start.

I am assuming this is not farmers market friendly? Packaged goods sometimes have an issue with not being a good farmers market match.

Trade shows - You can get a booth at a trade show for your market, or, you can do what I have done, don't get a booth, but actually go to the trade show, and search out companies you can work with. I did this with one Pet Industry manufacturer and put them with a wholesale distributor. It cost me $6 parking and that's it (On another note, it got that distributor as a client )

I do have question though, if it is all private/white label product, is your manufacturer already hitting the retail stores?

Why not build a list using PPC using Google content network?
          Or Facebook PPC.

You should be able to buy traffic fairly cheaply.

Offer a bribe to get an opt in. Perhaps a free report if you can write
          a relevant one.

Then market to the list every day.

If her products are high end perhaps buy a mailing list
of luxury car dealers and target them with direct mail

She is currently running limited advertising on Google adwords targeting both the content network and regular search results. Also Facebook with lots of impressions, but no clicks even though she is narrowing down to her target market demographics. Very frustrating, but need to keep on trying different ad copies and targets. May be soon to say if this is going to be a good investment. She is not capturing leads just yet and simply directing clicks to her website products page.

Regarding the luxury car dealers list recommendation, would you mind explaining how that correlates to organic food consumers? I mean I get that these are people that have most likely high acquisition power, but not convince they all care about eating organic foods. I'll look to research this and see if I find any correlation.

@OnlineStoreHelp thanks for your input. To answer your question the manufacturers are not hitting the U.S. retail stores as my wife only works with small medium size farmers in the south of Europe. These are people that produce very high quality organic products, but have no means of getting their products into the U.S. market. So the products are of very high quality and in enough quantity to cater to a niche market of hungry organic consumers. Consumers who are willing to pay a bit extra for something exclusive that the big corporations are not currently offering to them.

I hope that answered your question. Also the idea about not having a booth at the trade show and instead just attend and go visit prospect makes total sense. Specially when budget is an issue.

        thanks again.

Now this is just my personal opinion, but using Google adwords for this project is a waste of your valuable marketing dollars, right now. You don't really have a marketing plan or know exactly who your ideal customer is, so you can't really target them effectively through adwords.

You may be better off taking the time to sit down and figure out who your customers are and how you really plan to reach them.

Although your products are organic, maybe you should be trying to sell them to gourmet/specialty foods consumers. You stated these products have a high price point. Target fine food stores, gourmet food shops, gourmet food catalogs, and e-commerce sites, like Dean and Deluca.

As for getting a list of luxury car dealership customers, if think the poster meant that these may be the customers who would buy your wife's products. Depending on what the products actually are, you may also be able to sell directly to the dealerships as something they can give to their client to get them back into the showroom or as a thank you for purchasing.

You may also want to target companies who put together high end gift baskets, the kind given by corporations to clients, high realtors give to their clients, and gift bags given to Hollywood stars and big wigs.

Thank you again for all your input. After thinking a bit more about PPC I have to agree with you that this may not be the best use of her marketing dollars at this point.

Regarding the gourmet food catalogs I like the idea as an additional avenue. My wife was actually able to get on a popular gourmet catalog already. I have tried finding more, I'm sure there are plenty more. However I was not able to find many by just searching online. I also have looked into Google catalogs applications and I mostly see the big guys such as Dean and Deluca, Williams Sonoma, etc. She has already approached these guys and still waiting on an answer. My question is would you or any one here know of any directory of catalogs that may have more info on the small circulation catalogs and not just the Dean and Delucas of the world? That info would be very helpful.

      Thanks again.

Your wife could promote home parties for interested health groups as a fundraiser, giving them a [healthy] percentage with their members offering their living rooms for the parties. Sell up with organic food of the month followups.

Is there a political, social issue to rally around? Like maybe how our food choices have been restricted by big business or gov't sanctions? Make it about the cause. It doesn't need to be just about health benefits of eating organic.

I'm in NY too. Where are you?

@bizgroweer thanks for the thought. I do not think the typical Walmart shopper would be willing to pay for items that are more on the high end of the market regardless of quality. Also no disrespect to Walmart, but I do not think the positioning of the brand would benefit from being on Walmart's shelves. Actually it would most likely be the other way around.

      Thanks.

not Walmart per se (Although, we sometimes have a Lambo and a lot of Mercedes in the parking lot of the Walmart near me. Partly due to the economic changes causing weathy to be more budget concious, the offerings in Walmart these days, and this particular neighborhood is 30 miles from Denver, CO - so a bit rural.)

I posted the link because of the path: the winners were chosen because of their social causes, the social media campaigns the contestants used to get the votes garnerered a lot of interest, and other retailers might do something similar - so it's something to keep
        on the radar.

        lots of possible online carriers

on the scale you are talking you might then pursue personal/private chefs for wealthy people/corporations executive level dining. They seek the best ingredients worldwide and price is pretty much no object. They actually brag about buying specialty stuff and paying big for it.

Thank you and I also like your idea about pursuing personal/private chefs. Any idea on how I could tap into that market? Meaning any online directories or forums where these chefs may hang out?

      Thanks.

mmmmm just happen to be talking to someone in London with a similar situation. Haven read on here about the benefits of your wife's product and what the customer wants that you guys have to sell. IF this qualifies as a Luxury purchase, network with other people selling luxury items...free samples to buyers of Coach,Mercedes, etc...I dont recommend daily deals, UNLESS you sell MONEY....run a deal that gives them 40 bux to spend that you sell for 20...gets them involved, gets them in the store ?, gets them on your list ...might work for you as it did for a couple of my 'friends'....

btw....this is a great opp for you to share the product here ..in this thread...and a blog on the WF...give us the benefits , get a video explaining the chemistry involved and how it will make me 34 again...lol

also ....what are 'attractive' commissions ?
