Does anyone run a local mailing list selling email blasts?

I'm not sure what you'd call this business model, but a local marketing company here has a list of what they claim is 100k subscribers. They charge for sending out emails to their list. They mainly focus on local events and small business advertisement. Each email blast is about $250 bucks. They sell ad space in header and footers of each email as well. They send out emails daily. They offer special package deals for weekly and monthly email blasts. They've been in business in my city for two years and now are expanding this to several other cities.

We are working out a trade, they will promote some of my services and in exchange I'm doing some video work for them.

Does anyone here have any experience with running something like this? Has anyone advertised with any local mailing list like this? What was your results?

See if they will show you the report with the stats of some of their blasts.
It will include # of emails sent, bounce rate and the open rate.
Nothing private or confidential is on it so as far as Im concerned someone
that has an excuse for not willing to show this is hiding something.

I will be you dollars to donuts that 100k number is BS. No way he has that many bonafide opt ins in this area.
Not to mention they really spam the heck out of that list (which Im on) , often 3 emails per day, so I would be surprised to see a high open rate.

Not saying to not do it but make sure you get lots of value in return because what you are doing is FOR SURE valuable.

I was thinking the same myself. I'll bring that up in our meeting next week. I'm on that list as well and to be honest unless it's a really compelling headline I rarely read them. Then again as a marketer, I get a lot of mail, so the headline is everything for me.

Along with asking them to show you their numbers, I'd also call up a few of their current advertisers and see if they'll give you a minute to tell you whether the ads have been worth it for them or not.

According to these 2011 stats the avg open rate is only 23% - so take whatever number they give you and realize that less than 1/4 of that will be opening the email...how many see and respond to your ad is another story all together.

The local paper will send out a blast to 50k people for $2,800. They say the open rate averages 10% and the click rate is about 2%. This is also a flitered list. Which means they will target only the demographics we want. Also it is 100% ours. Only our email is sent.

Just to give you an idea of what other companies are charging.

$250 for 100k subscribers seems low to me but you never said how big of an ad that is or how much sharing there is within the email. If you are sharing the ad space with 30 other advertisers and you only get a small space that is likely too much.

If $250 even gets you one client, it paid for itself.
