My Drunk Friend Stumbled on the PERFECT Way to Find Offline Clients

Here in Sacramento, CA we just got done celebrating beer week (check out the link if your curious)

Sacramento Beer Week 2013 | February 22, 2013 – March 3, 2013

Anyways, after a few beers, we were looking for the next bar to finish off the night. We found the bar that looked good but we wanted to find out what beers they had on tap. After a Google search we found their Places page but it didn't have a website. Just before I was going to call my friend stumbled upon their Facebook page.

The owner was EXTREMELY active on their FB page. As a matter of fact, he had over 3,500 likes!

We get to the bar (unfortunately the owner wasn't there) but the next day I was on a mission to find the perfect cross of NO WEBSITE plus ACTIVE FB FAN PAGE.

Now I didn't find a ton of leads but what I did find was businesses who understand the power of the internet but don't have a website!

I'm taking action on Wednesday and I'll get you guys updated. Just don't go prospecting in Sacramento!

85% of mobile restaurant searchers convert... they want food, and they want it now, so there are always two questions I ask the owners:

    1. Are they finding YOU, or the Chilis up the road?
    2. If they do find you, is your site mobile-optimized so they can get your address, read your menu from their phone, and does your phone number have TEL: link so they can touch to call you?

I suspect the same logic could apply to bars. Most bars and restaurants put a ton of effort into making a cool homepage, and then drop the ball everywhere else on the site. Tell the owners these things and you'll get their business all day long. Good luck, man!

Hope this works out for you but somehow I don't see a business owner truly understanding the power of the internet and then not having a web site! Kind of an oxymoron!

Either way best of luck, report back how it goes!

Probably doesn't want to spend the money on a website and figures FB is good enough...

Hopefully that's not the case. I see it as the biz owner using FB as an easy/free barrier to entry to getting into the online world. Once they have some interaction going they can see the power of the web, and hopefully, be ready for a website.

I'll start contacting the leads this week and I'll let you guys know how it goes.

I agree. Also if they have a good social profile they're probably going to tell you they get enough business through that.

There's really no such thing as an easy sell.

    LMAO - love the story!

Interestingly, and I'm pulling statistics from my memory so don't quote me exactly, but I assure you the numbers are in alignment with reality.

70% of local businesses have a FB Page
    50% have a website
2% of consumers use FB to find a local business
97% of local online users use search, where 50% of those go to a business website.

do the math, conversion is on a website and business owners just don't get it.

    Hey TJ, interesting post...

It reminded me of my first offline venture a few years ago.
I did something similar with a twist.
And once I tweaked the method a few times to get it just right, I can assure you it worked like gangbusters..!

    Best of LUCK...

I recently picked up a very popular local restaurant that has a active Facebook presence. I keyed in on the search engine benefits of web/mobile that would draw from FB activity and how much more uniqueness sites would provide.

Using their understanding of the web from FB aspect made the move a lot easier for them to understand.

I looked up 45 restaurants today on google and 9 of them fit my "sweet spot" of no website but has a fan page.

Since there were only 9 I called each restaurant and asked who is responsible for running their FB page. I got everyone's name and now I'm going to work on my script to send them a message through FB.

    I'll keep you posted.

I'm confused, didn't you want to sell them a website? Forget who runs their Facebook page, go to the decision maker and sell them a site.

Ugh, dude you're about to blow it... there is a very high probability that whoever is managing their social presence also does web design or has web design contacts. They are a barricade not an aly. If you called the place and they furnished the name of the person who handles their social, surely they would also have been willing to tell you who the owner was.

Indeed! As there's a great chance the owner sees FB as enough for his needs, and doesn't want to pay for a website. These questions make him think about the money he's LOSING - and to his competitors no less.

Just to play Devil's advocate here, where did you get the stats?

Interestingly, and I'm pulling statistics from my memory so don't quote me exactly, but I assure you the numbers are in alignment with reality.

That's GREAT info. If you can find where you got these stats from, it'd be quite helpful. It speaks volume and makes a great follow up to ronrule's questions. And again, the money lost goes to comeptitors. Ouch. We have to solve this pain
