Man has Sold Millions of Lunar Land Deeds?!

This is a story I just ran across by a Nevada man, Dennis Hope, selling pieces of land at $22 each (which is really just a piece of printed paper the owners recieve in the mail):
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/07/090717-who-owns-moon-real-estate.html

He's managed to sell millions of "deeds" for 1 acre parcels of lunar property... and claims to have even sold them to celebrities and a few former presidents. Nonetheless, it's a cleverly creative and interesting concept that reminds me of Alex Tew of the milliondollarhomepage.com from a few years back.

Though some of the comments I've read in a few web sites aren't impressed and think he's "Madoff incarnate." That's a bit of a stretch comparison IMO. I'm almost tempted to test out a similar idea myself as an experiment...

Thoughts and opinions about selling intangible products like moon deeds and such?

      I think it's funny.

It gives the buyers something to talk about. Now, if he is trying to sell these things as legitimate deeds? Preying on stupid people?

      It's still funny to me...because it's ludicrous. But...it is a scam.

What if they're not stars? What if they are holes poked in the top of a container so we can breath?

I wish people would buy such things in my country. Not that I would sell moon land but it would make marketing a lot easier.

I don't think I'd call it a scam... the whole thing is
out in the open. I think it's more of a novelty than
anything else. I wish I'd thought of it! LOL

As long as it's in the fine print hey...those people could have read that!

He probably just crafted up some really nice looking "deeds" and was like hey....wanna buy a plot on the moon? Check this out...it's a 1 acre space...see how shiny this paper is? It's $22 bucks......

Props to him unless these people REALLY thought they were getting 1 acre of land on the moon lol...but even then.....who's fault is it REALLY?

Is this any different than buying a piece of paper that names a star after someone?

Don't make fun of buying a star. I have "The Claude Star".

It's huge, and old, and not very bright.

    Hi there,

Or is it any different that buying a coat of arms that's allegedly from your family. We all know a certain genius made millions doing just that.

    Good find!

    All the best,

    Sasha
