A Little Help with Hosting Clients Sites Please

First I apologise if this is in the wrong part of the forum, was not sure best place for it!

I have seen in other threads that some warriors will host clients mobile websites for them and charge a monthly fee. This is something I want to be able to offer to generate a monthly income.

Would you recommend either 1. to create a subdomain on my hosting such as mydomain.co.uk/clientname 2. Buy a .mobi domain for them or 3. create a subdomain on their current hosting and have that direct to my hosting?

If option 3, then please how would I do this. Tried to look it up but was a little confused about how to do it.

All advice would be really appreciated.

Just to clarify, a subdomain is this: clientname.mydomain.co.uk (mobile.website.co.uk).

    This is a subdirectory: mydomain.co.uk/clientname

If you have to host their mobile website separately, because they already have a host for their main site, I would recommend just getting a .mobi domain for them and hosting that.

Thanks Andrew, I had no idea they were different.

Do you use the mobi domains yourself? Do you put it in your name or the clients name?

If I was to do this and wanted to make money off hosting I would just get the .mobi website and charge for hosting. However if the client is even remotely technically inclined they might be suspicious as to why they need a separate hosting for their mobile website (because most hosts you could just create a subdirectory or sub-domain and put the mobile files there for no extra charge).

Hopefully an expert with the mobile website industry can chime in, or perhaps post this question in the mobile marketing section of the forum.

EDIT: it should be in the clients name, however this all depends on your business model.

      Hi Suzanne,

Best bet would be to get a reseller hosting account. I have a Hostgator account which costs 24.95 per month. Ome client and my hosting is paid for.

Watch out for hosting company's ToS, as they often do not allow you to host client sites on your non-reseller accounts.

The best practice for this would be to use a reseller account & host the customer domain on it's own cPanel account & use m.theirdomain.com

When the main site autosenses a mobile device, it would redirect to m.theirdomain.com for the mobile version.

I wouldn't use a .mobi domain, I would keep it on a subdomain if you have to.

A better solution would be to use responsive design--so the whole entire site changes it's sizing based on the screen used to view the site. That way you're using the same site for mobile and for desktops and tablets.

    I agree with Kingfisher85

The best practice is to use a reseller account & host the customer domain on it's own cPanel account & use m.theirdomain.com

You then provide your client with the redirect code for their main site which autosenses when the site is being viewed from a small screen device like a mobile, ipad, ipod etc

it would then redirect traffic from these devices to m.theirdomain.com for the mobile version.

Thanks, just one question, how would I do m.theirdomain.com, on my reseller account if their main site is hosted elsewhere. Sorry if it's obvious, but do not understand much about hosting etc.

It would be easiest to create the subdomain on their hosting account. If not, then move their current account to your reseller account.

Do what kingfish said. If you don't want to deal with support or don't have enough clients to make it worthwhile, you can just have them sign up under a hosting affiliate link. Some pay over $100 per signup depending on how many you sign up and others will give you a flat rate or a percentage.

Yeah, but be sure to recommend a good host ... not just whoever pays the most. Give them a bad one, and you'll make yourself look bad. Most of those $100 sign-up hosts are lousy EIG brands, so watch out!

Its better you do it with no1 or no 2 and not no 3 , since they have their own hosting , why they still need a subdomain while they already get their hosting and primary domain .

If you choose no 1 , you charge them with your own price by addon hosting and design service, if you choose no 3, they need paid for the hosting and paid for your service.

.Mobi is really a great but it kinda simple for the design so it depend that how is the design they want while some might need too complicated and with apps function.

You might be able to set the A record for the subdomain to point to your server. That way you could host their mobile site on your server with the subdomain mobile.website.com - I have never looked into doing this before though (custom DNS records for subdomains). Worth looking into if you want to make money off the hosting.

subdomains have hiccups when redirecting to them sometimes...if you are just doing mobile just get an account with unlimited add-on domains and host each on their own domain..if your clients need access you will need a reseller account.

That is against the terms of service on many web hosts. I would NOT recommend this. There's also major security & performance problems with piling tons of "addon" domains onto an account.
