You dont have to pay $2500 per year to be a member of Alibaba.

You are assuming here that the free membership has no value and that would be highly incorrect. I have sold probably 30 different loads on a free membership there.

Also I have been researching a bunch of other trades sites. There are ALOT of them nowadays that are catching up to Alibaba, and can offer you alot of good options.

Trade site are THE way to do exports these days...

If that were not true then Alibaba would not be publicly traded (it is), people are REALLY onto trade sites.

No more flying back and forth, going back to the post office... making phone calls. People can share inventory sheets, product pictures and warehouse pictures easily via pm... they can chat on instant message which is much better, because it creates easier communication than trying to understand each others dialect on the phone, or dealing with strange sounds and low quality overseas calls...

Trade sites generally make it more efficient to do overseas business in about 10 different ways. Alot of companies operate more efficiently nowadays because of them.

Man if you already do exports and you arent on trade sites, you are really missing it.

How much wood and charcoal do you sell? Are we talking bulk sales or small individual b2c sales?

Hi John, thank you for your reply.

I have been as free member on Alibaba since 2011, and get not good result until today. I never get real buyer here. Also, i have registered as free member in 10 b2b trade site beside Alibaba, likes tradekey, ec21, ecplaza, etc. What;s wrong? I need to wait for more time?

I sell for b2b sales. Minimum order is about 40 HC container or equivalent with 19-20 MT.

I dont really know enough about how you are doing things to give an accurate response my friend. Dont know if your prices are competitive...? What kinds of emails and offers you are sending? How you are approaching it? I know my own approach and the way I teach it works, but I have no idea how you are approaching this....Can I see a link to your listings?

Are you actively going after buyers via pm when you see a new buyer listing come up?

        -John

Ps. There do seem to be some buyers... Here are some current listings on just Alibaba... http://sourcing.alibaba.com/rfq_sear...plier=supplier

Again, can we see your listings? Maybe it's something easily fixed. With almost 200 million dollars per "day" exchanging hands there, certainly there are plenty of real buyers. We probably just need to tweak your offer and approach.

On another note, I have a whole forum on this subject, perhaps you should join. Not plugging, but it might help.

    A combination of all...

SEO is good if you are looking to run a long term and serious business.
Adwords are very good to bring in the first sales, as they can be extremely targeted.
When you are earning enough money for it, go for the alibaba account.

I have no experience with alibaba, but from what I hear from other people in the export business it is a great way to start new partnerships...

    2 questions kocenghabok

1: Are you pming new buyers listings weekly? Contacting them proactively?

2: Do you feel that your prices are competitive? In other words, do you have a USP?

This wasn't meant as a challenge, but I have done really well at this, Im hoping I can help.

The last thing anyone wants to hear is that they need help selling in their own industry, and Im not suggesting that, just saying that where the specific area of trade sites are concerned I have some experience that may be helpful.

Will check this out later when I get a chance and come back.

    Sincerely,
    John

Of course, if i can get, at least, their mobile phone number, I will contact them. But, you know, sometimes, buyer hide their contact information, or, only premium member can see their contact information.

Yes. My price is competitive. My unique selling point is our charcoal product, is made from the best hardwood. Also, we are not stole or do illegal logging to get this wood, we buy it from our government.

Yes it helps alot... My first year I didnt use Alibaba chat, because I was so new, that I would have to think my answers out ahead of time, so I only used PM... Then when I felt confident that I could hold a real time conversation, I started using chat with any prospect that I felt was serious.

It helped ALOT because my prospects and I could accomplish more in one day that I previously could in a week sending PM's back and forth. Many of them were in a different time zone, so the delays made things slow. Once I got on chat though, it really helped me close deals alot faster, plus I got to know my customers more, and we enjoyed a sense of humor together...

One night, lol I was praying for this deal to close hanging on the edge of my seat and I was saying "cmon God , cmon God..."

And this dude suddenly popped up on chat and said "Hi John"

Shocked, I said back I "Are you God?" Lol

And he joked back and said "No, but close enough".

It was funny for me to see how people from other countries shared the same sense of humor we do, and I began having fun with my prospects...He had no idea what I was talking about and I was just acting stupid, but he was funny enough just to go along with it.

It really helped alot to get on chat and get to talk to people... Also I find its a good way to query people and find out what they want to buy... I sometimes get on there and if someone has buyers listings up for my product I will say "Hey are you still in the market for....?" and get some dialogue started.

Anyway, that was a long story, but yeah I find chat to be good, when you get close to closing someone especially... I usually let a couple of PM's go back and forth first and make sure they are serious and then I will get on chat with them, unless Im just on the trade manager surfing around to talk to someone... You pick up some good leads that way.

Sometimes they wont be interested in YOUR product, but they may offer you an opportunity to sell one of theirs.

Trade MGR is a good thing. I'm not always on but when I get on its good.

        -John

Ps. Also, whether its chat or pm...if Im not getting leads and I want to make a sale I proactively chase buyers down and pm them... That is how I have gotten most of my more serious leads. By making the introduction via PM. Sometimes the leads that naturally come into your box arent always serious, fewer one are, however the ones you pm you have more control over who they are so you get better leads.

        Almost everyone will answer you.

Oke, but i have question about sending PM to your buyer. Because of, some buyers on alibaba mention "only verufied member can contact this buyer" And it makes me don't know how to contact them.

Hey guys, it's good to see some Alibaba discussion here.

I am also thinking of signing up so am interested to read your experiences and tips.

We have a supplier that provides us with possibly the cheapest plastic products in the world (not an exaggeration) and they are happy for us to grow their business for them.

So I am following this thread with great interest.

Kocenghabok, could I offer one piece of contstructive advice? Maybe change your main photograph. Have better looking pieces of charcoal and put them into a tidier looking box. The charcoal looks all broken up and the box looks like its about to fall apart.

      Hi

Thank you for your suggestion. But, I still don't understand about "put them into a tidier looking box". Any sample of that?

I'm not a manufacturer but several of the suppliers I've bought from have pro-actively contacted me. That means they either used Alibaba or a similar site and seen my requests for information about that product or they searched google visited my site and contacted me through my website.

I don't go with everyone that emails or calls me, but I have used a few suppliers this way. I get approximately 20 - 30 emails a week from different suppliers. It wouldn't be practical for me to switch suppliers every day. When I do look for new suppliers I have gone with people that have emailed me, although I usually ignore them until I need someone.
