Been gone for a while since my web development business has kept me busy.
I was approached by a friend that runs a blog/print magazine and wanted my advice on getting in more revenue. I recommended he chat with local business ess about placing ads on the site .One of the business owners asked If they could sell products on the site and give my freind a cut. I told him that is basically affiliate marketing but I only know how to set that up online. How would you guys recommend setting something like this up? It seems interesting . I'm thinking I can get in on the deal and set up website pages for these businesses and then sign them up as affiliate merchants maybe...

Thanks for any tips.

He may want to look into 1ShoppingCart.com, he can set up his own affiliate program, set commissions and many other things.

That is a tough call given that its a print based model, its difficult to track. It would have to be for a very good coupon that would really incent people to use a coupon or discount code and then can be easily tracked.. If it is just an ad, next to impossible to track and your friend will get screwed. The other issue is reporting. You could have a very good coupon but if the merchant under-reports the use, he is out money.

The other thing to do, is agree to it but make a minimum pay out for running it each month. That way even if the merchant turns out to be shady, your friend still gets something out of it.

There are lots of affiliate networks out there and yes you can set up your own (don't agree with the poster that automatically throws out 1shopping cart since that won't help in this case). The problem always will be tracking.

Your friend is probably very familiar with advertising if he's been in the blog/print ad industry. Why is he considering a commission based model rather than charging a flat-rate advertising fee?
