What are some successes you've had with SMS marketing and why it worked for you? How did you avoid pissing people off while invading their mobile devices?

The most important thing is to not send messages that are not direct. Working with a tutoring agency in Vancouver I found they had the best response when only sending messages that benefited that person. Don't send generally messages - make sure the messages are very targeted.

ie: "We have 10% off pizza this weekend" vs "Happy birthday this weekend! Show this message to get 10% off your pizza at Jim's pizza shack!"

You also aren't "invading" anything when they opt-in to your list. Now, if you're spamming people, be prepared to piss everyone off. Also, I wouldn't text anyone more than once a week with a deal or coupon.

Couple rules of thumb that have worked well for me.

    1) Don't send messages that have little value, and 2) don't send out too often.

I have a client that sent out 4 messages in one week leading up to Super Bowl Sunday. (He sends broadcasts from his cell phone) The campaign bombed and there were alot of unsubscribes that week. (50-60 out of 825 subscribers) He learned his lesson and only sends good stuff now.
