Market your name of company name

I am in the process of setting up social media accounts for my business but am going back and forth whether I should make the accounts my company name or personal name.

I the pro's and con's either way. I see some people that are marketing their company names only but see other wanting to get their personal name recognized so they market their name.

I am stuck right now and wondering what you do?

I offer services to local clients.

Thanks

I'd say your company name. Most clients feel more comfortable dealing with a company than just a guy, that is, unless the guy is someone they already know and trust. If you are sending out postcards or any marketing materials to prospects, I think most people would want to see a company name not just John Smith, web developer.

I'm not saying don't use your name at all. Still use your name in you marketing but use it like John Smith, President of Acme Marketing.

I'm sure there are people out there that disagree but that's how I see it.

Does your company name overlap with a high search volume keyword phrase? Nice to get some organic search love from the company name.

Easier to outsource everything and make hands-off money when it is in a company name vs. your name. They email support@ not you!

I used both personal and company name in facebook and only company name in twitter. Using personal name in Facebook I can easily engage with 'fans' 'friends' and 'followers'

Use company name and identify yourself with your name as a person who works under the company. I think people accomplish more and can be taken as more trust worthy when they are part of a team rather then being solo.

  • Why not begin by focusing with your company name but having a tie in with your personal name as well? Many local businesses like to keep their business relationships local as well so it could be beneficial for you to incorporate both. For example, you could simply put "Check out (company name) started by founder and CEO (your name here)"

Or "Visit (your name)'s page, CEO of (your company)"

    Keep it simple.

That's odd...I did copywriting, construction contracting (floors & bath remodels) and business development consulting work for years and years using my own name...nobody ever batted an eyelid about writing out a check to me, either. In fact, I continue to brand myself with my personal name today even though I DO have a registered company (also branded).

What do you offer that's UNIQUE?

Once people understand that, they don't care about anything else except "How can I get that unique thing?"

Now I have to admit that this approach works best for personal services. If you're going to open a store, or manufacture something, then a company name is the way to go. That way, if it fails, you're not tainted with that stain for the rest of your life.

But as for credibility, as long as your market sees your uniqueness, it doesn't matter. Since (if I read correctly) you already have a company with a name, you may as well use that though.

      Basically .... here here

Matters not whether it's company or name - what matters is consistency across the net & quality shining through.

Unless you are famous and well known person in the market , so you can promote your business in personal name.
If you are not then is better to promote with your business name. It would be more easy to starting promote compare with personal.

      I completely disagree.

Personal name vs business name is simply about if you want to be at the center or behind the scenes.

If you want to do any sort of consulting, it makes perfect sense to market yourself as a person - that creates the "famous" recognition.

In the case of the OP, all you have to do is answer this question: Do you want to be known as the expert or do you want to manage a team of experts?

Personally, I'm a privacy freak and I prefer staying behind the scenes. I would rather stay as anonymous as possible. I would die if people called me on my private cell phone and stuff like that. So for me it would make no sense to market things as my personal name.
