What to do with an 8000 email list?

I'm in contact with a company, well actually I'm their customer. They are a manufacture of superfoods who mainly wholesale their products but want to increase their own sells through their own website. In fact their online presence is virtually non existent selling just 5-7 items a day.

One of the many things they need help in is email marketing, for as long as I've been a customer they've never sent out anything.

They told me they did email marketing before paying an agency around $400-600 a month and they didn't get one return from it. All the company did for them was to send out their newsletter (which the customer wrote) once a month.

I'm trying to gain their trust as they've been burnt a lot by marketing companies in the past and I want to start with their email marketing as I think it's the fastest and easiest way to get a return. They will launch a new website soon (which I'm not involved with) so I think this will be a great opportunity to re-engage with their customers.

The superfoods market is already very popular and really growing and the company has great products.

I was thinking about doing everything for them, from the copy writing to managing their list.
My issues are the following:-
  • I've never done this for anyone.
  • I don't know a good formula for retail clients to get them to buy though the list
  • They've been burnt before so not sure how to charge but I really believe that it could be lucrative so I don't want to under charge. Maybe go for a commission deal
  • Not sure if the newsletter method once a month or just sending out short regular emails produces the best results.
  • Where do I get good copy writers from that know how drive buying decisions and how much am I expected to pay for them.

What sort of conversion rates do you think is realistic, 2%?

    One of your questions is:

"Where do I get good copy writers from that know how drive buying decisions and how much am I expected to pay for them."

Have you looked in the warrior for hire section?

Probably good idea to start in this forum, wouldn't you agree?

Thanks Tom, yes I did think of that. But I'm sure there are other places. Any ideas of costs?

I do not have clue as to costs. You will simply have to contact people to learn what they charge. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

First off, you have to ask your self and the business what action you want the customers to do. Sounds like the other company that serviced them before just wanted to maintain a warm relationship with the customer by use of newsletter - but there was no action initiated telling the customers why to buy. Nothing wrong with that because a cold list is harder to sell you. Here's an Idea: Write up an email that includes a special offer/coupon number, etc. then have the offer expire in a week. This will allow people to feel a sense of urgency to act. For the ones that didn't act, you send another email saying the offer has been extended (another way to extract more purchases)...Just look at Companies that you are on there mailing list...this will give you an idea on what to write..I'm sure you are on a lot of marketing lists. Godaddy comes to mind for me, because their coupon has expiration dates and offer savings if you act now. Companies like this spend millions working with consultants on how to get people to buy...why re-invent the wheel copy those *******s

One most important thing..that could me MORE important that what I listed above: You have to ensure that the client's website is conducive to quick purchases. Does it look good on all browsers; is the checkout process easy..this is basically the concept of sales funnel in a basic form...how to fix this? Copy Amazon's check out system as much as you can [see how easy their system is? they test the crap our of it and hire consultants to see which things ensure easier ordering and increase sales. Why re-invent the wheel?

    Thanks Stewane

They are in a bit of a mess with their online activities, spent money no return, had a split where the previous workers took the domain name of the original website.

The are getting their website updated but it's very delayed.
But I'm in the process of writing a whole marketing strategy for them, they seem happy with the approach. As they said they know nothing about marketing!!
    Great for me!
