Advice on B2C middleman business?

I have been thinking over a potential outside local marketing sales business, and would really appreciate any advice, or guideline to help me get things going.

So, to be more specific about my business plan, I feel there is a strong demand by local consumers(and businesses as well) for a specific product/service. However, there are also many companies around trying to sell the same products/services.
My thought process is, instead of representing just one company as a sales consultant, and have to compete with all the competition. Why not work as an independent consultant, finding potential customers, and working to get them the best deal by pinning the xyz businesses against one another.

I know this isnt a new idea. I am just seeking help regarding more of the finer details that could/would be involved when it comes to getting things started and the best way to approach these businesses. Creating contracts, legal issues, etc.
Any advice/opinions I would really appreciate!

I probably should have given an example of what I mean by selling a product/service.
Example: Consumers seeking out a landscaping job and continued service. I meet with the consumer to find out exactly what they have in mind, and then also offer other ideas. Figure out what they are willing to pay, and go to work contacting several landscaping companies to negotiate the best deal of products/services for the potential customer!
