How Would You SEO a Non-Profit Organization

If you were to be hired to search engine optimize a non-profit organization who wants to be found for two word keywords that are related to their organization name, how would you do it?

The organization's site can be found if you are to search " org name + city" but you can't find them when searching using "org name" alone as it seems to be competing with a lot of many different international websites for its own name.

Have anyone accepted this kind of project before? How did you do it?

The exact same way you would optimize a for-profit local business. If they're facing stiff competition from large international organizations, it may require more work...so bill your time accordingly.

SEO for a non-profit organisation is rather like doing it for a profit focused one. Except there's generally a lower budget. And less competition. But its still about keywords, content, tags, navigation and links.

As an aside, Google offers free Adwords to certain qualifying charities.

Don't do it. Use direct mail. I learned this the hard way. I'm working with a NFP right now and using only direct mail and the results are ridiculous, in a good way. Trust is huge in that "niche," and direct mail demonstrates that you're not just a fly by night company run by some dude sitting in his cellar.

Highly targeted, send them to a kickstarter page with a VIDEO message from the visionary at the NFP and MAIL a thank you letter to everyone who gives.

Thanks for your thoughts. The thing is, they're not ranking for the org name if you're not typing a local modifier so when people search for them from within they're locality, they're virtually non-existent. So basically, they want to rank for their org name when searched without any modifier which, as of the moment are populated by international results.

I think I'm going to approach this by targeting the right keywords, on-page optimization, g+ local SEO to help them rank locally, links, and will tell them to blog after I add some kw focused pages as they only have 5 pages as of now.

Thanks again for all your suggestions.

You already answered your own question. A locally optimised Google+ account will be the real key to this

Look into Google Grants for Non-Profits...if your non-profit qualifies, you can get $10,000 of FREE Adwords advertising per month.

We've been successful helping both international and local charities send bucket-loads of traffic to their websites on Google's dime, so that's always the first think I look at for a non-profit.

          Hope that helps!
