Local Coupon Sites - Help Me Understand

Hello All,

I have submitted one of my local clients to a bunch of coupon sites, over 80. Only got accepted in 2 of them. All of these sites are the typical affiliate coupon feed type sites.

Searching for local coupon sites. There are only a handful of national local coupon sites. I only found 5 that were free and 2 that charged.

When I say "national local coupon sites" I am talking about coupon sites that have local coupons from all around the US.

There tends to be a handful of local coupon sites for cities with any decent size which are usually on the sites of TV, Radio, newspapers or valpak, coupon clipper.

Why so few national local coupon sites?

Is it a poor business model, to much work, too much risk for local businesses?

What's your thoughts on this?

Thanks
Matt

    Is your question
Why is it so hard to find national sites that offer quality local coupons?

If so then I would say that its probably hard to do profitably, you would have to have tons of reps calling all across the US to sell spots and really you can only charge so much.

Then you have to work with them on changing promos, customer service, hand holding and such and I just dont think any big company has found a way to make it work.

So nationally they have found it much easier, so far anyway, to target the larger companies that will buy ads across the entire network rather than small segments of it.

Heck even the valpak and money mailer who is known for local coupon distribution dont do a good job of getting the local coupons online of their clients. I suspect that on the national level they havent made it easy for the local franchisees to do from a software perspective.
Also remember that the franchisees are not really marketing people and are used to peddling their mail advertising for years and have not necessarily kept up with technology changes.

Monster opportunities are available for anyone who can figure out how to distribute coupons online effectively at the local level.

      Yep that's my question.

And everything you said was pretty much what I was thinking. Because if it was profitable there would be way more options then what there currently is.

I agree that this is a monster of an opportunity. I've been working on trying to find a solution as this would be a great way for local businesses to get some good relevant links, citiations, drive traffic to their business, aquire new customers, etc.

The biggest problem I see is how would you create multiple coupon sites that are all not just duplicate content. Which is pretty much every other coupon site out there is just duplicate content from coupon feeds.

Perhaps the promotion just isn't aggressive enough for it to warrant posting on these coupon sites? Just a thought.
