The Friday Night Well

Ive have a fair amount of Courvoisier VSOP in my system and I feel like answering any questions about selling/marketing to/for small business owners that I have knowledge about.

I will answer any legit question on the subject.
What do you want to know?

I will commit to answering till midnight or till I pass out, whichever comes first.

    I'll start off by asking;

If you had to start over again. Would you focus on a single niche? Do you believe by focusing on a single niche is a more progressive take rather than jumping all over?

For the very beginner who wants to build confidence I lean towards this because it will be easier to learn and master one niche.
You can make a heck of an income just focusing on one niche.

People will pay you a premium for being the best in your area of expertise.

As for me, I am interested in too many thing to only focus on one niche.

However if I had to start over and the only knowledge that I could bring with me is advice to myself then I would tell myself to focus on one niche till I became the supreme master of it and then branch out.

Somehow I am always able to hear the dark humor in your written words and they make me lol, so thanks for that. Okay I got a question.

Found an "institutional" prospect that really needs help with a horrid, 2001 looking website full of terrible ASP pages, no social media and no videos either, in a very lucrative market.

Anyway my first contact was by voice mail, where I stumbled on my intro in such a bad way that it wasn't even funny - I don't want to blame my dog for it, but it really was her fault. Anyway, I am sure the lead thinks I am either completely inept and/or devoid of character.

Oh drunken one, what would you do for your next contact attempt?

Leave another message and Speak as the dog and tell how you were pranking your master by humping his legs, effectively throwing off his pitch and that he is a smart mofo that can help your business so you should call him back.

If you cant pull this off by phone then do it in writing. You know picture of dog with speech bubble or better yet since you are a video guy, do it that way.

How can they ignore someone like this?

I've got one...... My brother and a friend have started a landscaping business and they want to build out a maintanence route.

They've asked me to help them and their funds are limited.

The idea I came up with was a free tree when someone calls in to sign up with an agreement for this summer (3 months).

People call the number or go online and sign up. When they do this, they're instructed to place the flag where they want the tree and when the crew comes in, they will begin maintenance AND install the tree.

    The FLAG?

Yeah. This will be promoted using door hangers with a flag attached for the tree.

In fairness, this is an idea I got and expanded on in this forum.

What do you think? How would you tweak this? Any other ideas to promote landscaping services?

As they're limited on funds, I financed all costs for trees, flags, fliers and website.

Well just sticking with the tree idea cuz Im thinking in your neck of the woods this might work and Im also going on the assumption that you are targeting at least mid to upper level middle class.

Make a big deal about how you not only plant this tree but that on your website you will do something to mention how the client is awesome friend of the environment. Pictures, accolades and such

I would also put some kind of yardsign by the tree you plant that serves as a way to brand your company and also demonstrate how that homeowner is awesome friend of the environment.

Also I think this promo is something press release worthy so dont forget to do that.

  • You may even be able to work with the city or county to get free trees from them. If so, you could leverage the publicity even more.

Another idea is to give them a tree but also some packs of free tree seeds for the kids. It seems like every kid is "green" these days, and involving them goes a long way with a family.

      Hi there,

This is a great tactic. We had a similar idea where we sent one of our client's employees out to the local schools to talk to classes about what they do. They brought a game loosely related to their business, but also brought a mug with the company logo emblazoned on it, with the instructions, "Bring this to your parents". We knew the kids would have no use for it but we didn't want it tossed in the rubbish. We wanted the mug to go to the house and sit silently on the shelf.

There's a few different ways to leverage this.

My question: How's your head this morning?

      All the best,

      Sasha.
