That's a long time

(this post is for entertainment only. you may say cold calling does not work but you'd be wrong. )

I cold-called a business yesterday. I got out maybe seven words when the business owner said, "Not interested. I'll never be interested. I get five calls a day about this. I handle everything myself and I have for 23 years. I have a long list of satisfied customers because I handle the business. Not you. You can call me back in 6 days, 6 months or 6 million years, the answer will always be no."

Now, that's entertainment. I love it.

    You say you have a long list of satisfied customers because you handle it yourself. You do what you are best at. And you are confident that you are the best _____ there is. I can hear it in your voice. Confidence is hard to miss.

    No one is good at everything and what I am good at is bringing more people into your store more often. That is what I do! It is why I have a long list of satisfied customers.

    If you have all the customers you can handle I understand that you have no need for a service like mine. But if you and your staff would like more customers more often I would love to show you how we can spread the word that ______ is the best _________ in _________.

    So shall I continue.... yes or no?"

    If he still says no thank him and hang up. I would likely mail him a letter giving him my contact info since I will never be calling him again.

    If he says yes I would ask questions to learn about the business and what I could do to help him.

    The key is to be confident. You don't have time to waste on him, remember that. He needs to feel you believe that.
