"Places" has disappeared, why?

This is for some of you Google experts. Why was the 'Places' link removed from Google search?

They way things stand now there is only a 7 pack and after that a person will have to switch over to maps to find more local listings.

How can Google SEO be done now with only 7 places to rank for?

Many people searching for local listings won't even know to switch over to maps. This is a really strange change for Google.

I went looking for answers and found this, but it's not a really good explanation: Google Local Results Drops "More Results Near..." To "Improve" Local Search Experience

Maybe some Warriors have more information???

Personally I think this is a move by Google for desktop results versus mobile search.

Search local on mobile lately? It's pretty much nothing but Google local + results.

This is a real pain in the A**, i used places as an easy way to find local businesses that do not have a website etc. Back to trolling the yellow pages i guess.

Why can't google just leave things alone.

I have said before, that i can see a day not too far in the future when all spots on page 1 of google will be PAID only with no organic results.

This is one major reason you never base your whole business around something you don't control.

You have to be ready to move with the punches.

Sure you will have vendors and stuff you can't control in any healthy business but the further from your control things are the more they can be pulled out from under you.

Sometimes I think big G makes changes "just because they can".

Sadly the majority of people that USED the places expansion, were using scrapers and bots. It was a lesser utilized portion of search.

Must get in the 7 pack! Or, start ranking your clients above. It seems that more sites are ranking above the 7 pack now than before.

Anyway, you can't really use maps as a substitute, the algorithm is quite different than places.

I think the change is made mostly to bring in a new feature that brings more relevant results for people in cities with multiple zip codes. We'll see.
