Word of mouth clients - SEO?

I've heard many freelancers/self employed that offer design, programming etc don't struggle that much when it comes to finding new customers. As most of them get new business through referrals, so I was wondering if it's the same with SEO/PPC business? Whats your experience?

Why would SEO and PPC be different than any other service? If you are providing a quality service and your customers are satisfied, referrals are bound to occur. If you struggle to receive them, incentives such as discounts to your current clients in return for referrals have been known to drastically increase inbound leads.

These people that say they get work by word of mouth fall into two categories.

    1. The Liars / Overstaters

They 'say' they get loads by word of mouth, but they're struggling, they don't know how to market themselves... but they want you to think they're doing ok.

    2. The Experienced

Then there's those that have been doing this for a while. They've done a load of work and they get clients just from the existing work they've done and the people they've met along the way.

Oh... and to answer your question. It doesn't matter what service you offer.
