Stop Being Afraid and Take Action Today! Advice From An Introvert

Hey fellow offliners,

For some reason I felt really inspired to make a thread to help motivate you guys and really push you to get out there and take action to get your businesses going. Keep in mind that this is all coming from an introvert here, so I know exactly what a lot of you are going through. I'm going to forewarn you that this post is a little long, but I HIGHLY encourage you to read it if you're serious about doing offline.

One thing that I've learned since I first got into offline marketing is that business doesn't come to you. You can sit here and read every thread in the Offline section or spend hundreds on WSO's, but the truth is you will never gain any clients or make any unless you TAKE ACTION. It's been said time and time again by people on here, but there's a difference between just hearing it, and putting it to use.

Even after reading this thread, I know some of you will probably feel really motivated to finally make today the day that something happens. But what will happen to over 80% of you? You might take the step to gather some newspapers to find prospects or go out and find a phone book, but you won't make the phone calls. Why is this? FEAR!

I know this because I've been there before. I spent a couple hours driving around finding local papers to find leads. By the time I got home, I told myself, "well it's getting kind of late, I'll start calling tomorrow." Tomorrow came and went. The papers just sat on my desk until I eventually forgot about them. Was I lazy? No. I was just scared to pick up the phone and make the calls so I thought of as many excuses as possible. You've probably used the same excuses:
"It's too early to call"
"I'll wait until after lunch"
"They're probably busy right now, I'll call when it's slower"
"I don't really want to call on a Monday because it's the beginning of the week"

All of these excuses are just fear. Fear really consumed me and stopped me. I know I've said it already, but I want to express to you just how badly I let fear stop my potential success. I once drove to a networking event and sat in the parking lot for 10 minutes trying to talk myself out of going in. Mind you, this was a fairly small event of about 20 people and I could not work up the courage to go in. I ended up chickening out and going home. I cannot even begin to tell you how disappointed I was in myself that day.

From that day on, I told myself I cannot go on like this. Something has to change. I was so embarrassed and ashamed that I started to really reexamine my life and the way I thought. I had made money in AM and selling on eBay, but I didn't see those as long term ventures. Keep in mind I'm a college student right now, so I was really trying to think long term. At this point, I gave myself two options:
  1. Be a wage slave for the rest of my life and work a regular 9-5 (been there, hated it)
  2. Get over my fear and build this business

Like all of you, my ultimate goal in life is to be my own boss. So needless to say, I chose option #2.

I'm not going to sit here and tell you that it was easy. My first cold call attempts were heart wrenching. We all have the fear of rejection, and when you're getting rejected repeatedly, it can be extremely discouraging. There were plenty of times when I wanted to just give up. But I pictured myself waking up at 9AM every morning to go to a job that I hated, being told when I could go to lunch for 30 minutes, and help some other country make millions while I get a fraction of it.

So I pressed on until I had success. I promise you, nothing feels better than when you land your first client. It's reassurance that you're capable of doing it and shows you that success is possible and realistic.

I still hate cold calling and don't enjoy it at all. But guess what? A majority of my new business comes through referrals now! I honestly don't have to cold call if I don't want to, but I still do from time to time because I've gotten pretty good at it.

If I could give one solid piece of advice to anyone that really wants to make money with offline, it would be to get away from the computer. I constantly see people wanting to rely on just emails or sending direct mail. Those methods are fine, but doing them strictly to avoid interacting on the phone or in person is a cop out and a way of letting your fear get the best of you.

I'm not trying to start a debate here about what's the best way to find prospects, just giving you my personal experience. Business owners trust people that they know. Let me break it down to you this way. Pretty much anyone can send an email or send a mailer, but A LOT of people are too scared to go to events or call businesses up. You need to stand out, not blend in with the other hundreds of marketers spamming company inboxes. This is something that a lot of offliners miss or fail to realize.

Stop being a nameless and faceless marketer. Put yourself out there, take action, and you will get results, guaranteed. Otherwise, you can sit in an office with someone telling you what to do, when to do it, and how it needs to be done for the rest of your life. Stop being afraid of rejection and overcome whatever is holding you back.

I went to a networking event the other day and I was the ONLY internet marketing person there. So many people there said that they needed someone to help them, but didn't really know where to look so they ended up trying it themselves. This is why you see so many awful looking sites, improperly optimized pages, and companies with no social media presence at all. They don't know what they're doing, but haven't found anyone that they can trust enough to help them.

You need to get up, take action and hustle. Being lazy doesn't get results. I watch A LOT of interviews with entrepreneurs, and the ones that are truly successful hustled day in and day out to earn what they have. That's what inspires me. With any business, you get out what you put in. If you spend 30 minutes a day making calls and 8 hours browsing WF, then don't expect to be successful.

I've rambled on a lot longer than I expected lol, but I'm sure you get the point. Sorry if there are spelling/grammar mistakes, I just started typing away. No more excuses on why you can't do something or why you have to put off taking action until tomorrow. And by taking action, I don't meet looking up leads. I mean going out and turning leads into prospects by calling and networking.

I'll let Michael Scott close us out:

I'm so mad the Office is over!

    Glad you took the leap.

I really appreciate this post. Personality types and how they influence our behavior and the way that we perceive the world and feel about others is very interesting. It sounds like one of the keys to your success is not just taking action, but actually taking the time to understand yourself so that you can capitalize on your strengths and take action, or avoid not taking action, in a way that makes sense for you. This shows a high level of emotional intelligence, and EQ is a much better indicator of a person that will be successful than IQ. Really good post and I think that people will get a lot of value from it.

I totally agree, you have to get out there and work to be successful. Too many people want to "get rich quick" these days.

Fear is often stopping many people from starting which is funny
because exactly what do you have to be afraid of?

If someone says no or is mean to you what have you lost?

The only thing you've done is increased your chances of getting
a paying client or getting referred to one.

        Terrifying!!

You should get a friend, your spouse or your partner to yell at you and
abuse you and swear at you right now.

See you didn't die...and no business owner is going to be that bad.

The other thing that stops people is inertia.

An object at rest tends to stay at rest.

As soon as you do something...anything...it gets much easier
to do more because you're actually moving and building some
        momentum.

One simple exercise is to work out the simplest task you can
take to move yourself forward and do that...immediately.

Then repeat this process over and over.

Do that for long enough and you'll start seeing some results.

        Kindest regards,
        Andrew Cavanagh
It's actually funny that you say this because when I was attempting to overcome my fear, one of the things that I asked myself was "what's the worst that can happen?" Once you realize that nothing bad is really going to happen from just trying to make a call or going to an event, then things become a lot easier. There really is nothing to be afraid of.

Thanks for the kind words and I think you hit it right on the head. It's all about finding what works for you and making it work. When I stopped trying to rationalize my fears and realized that I could either go all in or be stuck doing a job I hate, things really started to connect for me. I hope this thread helps some others out who have been struggling to take action.

Very cool post, and I had a similar situation. I actually finally just called a few places with jobs and sent them to my website instead of sending a resume, and my website makes me look like an agency. Long story short - one call, and I now get about $2500 a month from one web development agency, and I outsource all of the programming to India at a cost of about $1000 and pocket $1500 each month. From one phone call to a job ad.

If you are stalled and stuck in the dreaming phase, get out there and get started.

Stop waiting for everything to be "perfect"--it never will be.

The time will go by. The next 6 months will pass, whether you do anything or not. And at the end of that time, will you have something, or nothing?

Up to you. Guaranteed: if you do nothing, you will have nothing.

Thank you very much for this. I am currently working on starting my own internet marketing company and I am also an introvert. I think this industry attracts a lot of introverts because we can hide behind our computer screens without actually meeting people. I am pretty intimidated by cold calling, but it's a skill I need to master. Great post!

No problem. Just go for it. Don't hesitate or over think things. The more you sit and contemplate, the more excuses you'll come up with not to take action. Personally I'm not a huge cold-caller, and recently I've been going to networking events which have lead to some good results. Try different methods of finding clients and vary things up.

I also definitely agree with you about a lot of introverts being in this industry (which is one of the reasons I wanted to make this thread). As you actually start to contact businesses and meet owners, it will get easier.

Thanks for this post...Me myself being introverted I have found it hard to get myself out there and talk to business owners...
So when I have managed to get leads I would not follow through and call them because of my shyness or fear or whatever you call it

I have to get over this to really launch my business but I just don't know how?

I actually had a similar problem when I first started. I received referrals to some businesses that could use my service but I was hesitant to call them. Ultimately what it boils down to is just giving it a try.

It will help you out a lot to go to a networking event with a friend. That way you won't be as scared or feel awkward because you don't know anyone there. That was probably my biggest fear with networking events. I would think to myself, "where do I go when I walk in?", "What if I look out of place?". Mind you, I'm a college student and typically the youngest person in the room when I go to these events.

Here's something that helped me mentally be able to get through cold calls. I just thought to myself, "If they decline, I'll never have to deal with them again." Now, I didn't think this in a negative way. It was more of, if they're not interested, who cares? I didn't know these people personally so if they reject me, nothing in my life will change. I can't remember which member here it was, but they said something along the lines of "If someone turns you down, keep calling. Someone will want your services." So it's basically a point of, you don't worry about the people that decline you, focus on getting the ones that will accept you. Hopefully that helps some.

For me it was actually working 9-5 for a company in London that made me more of an extrovert. Before then I would work for myself, and I was quite successful, but then the recession came along and made things more difficult. However, the majority of my communication when working for myself was online, and so my interaction with people verbally was very limited.

Now that I work for a company, I'm always interacting with people in person, over the phone, over Skype, etc... which has pushed the introverted me into the background. I'm now at the point in my life where I'm more than happy to communicate with people offline, and I'm looking to restart the business I had before my 9-5 -- namely, content creation in its various forms.

I suppose the kernel of my message is, don't shun the 9-5 idea just because it doesn't seem ideal, it can give you a LOT of experience in communicating with people, as well as understanding how the internals of a company work. This is ESPECIALLY true if you're working for a start-up, where you're often involved in the internals of the company, where all hands are on deck and nobody really DEMANDS that they are the boss. It's a much more democratic environment.

With all that said, however, a dead-end 9-5 job such as McDonald's or the like will probably not get you anywhere. You will still be communicating, but the level of communication is mundane, repetitive, and requires little thought. Nevertheless, I've been there and done that! There is nothing wrong with it, as long as you keep looking for the next thing.

Take everything as valuable experience, and never stop trying to make yourself a better person.

Great points here. This is especially helpful for people who are completely anti-social and afraid of human contact in general. Luckily, my shyness isn't at that level. But for people who are even more introverted and shy than me, I think getting a job is a great place to start. Because it gives you a more professional atmosphere than school or just hanging out with your friends. Lucky for me, a majority of the jobs I've had have been working with older people which helps me a lot when I go to networking events.
