Pay Attention to This Warning Sign When Meeting Prospects or New Clients

Remember that you always want to be seen as a peer to your clients. You're not their employee, but you're not their boss either. You're peers.

Pay attention to their eyes and where they look before shaking hands. If they simply maintain eye contact and extend their hand without glancing down at your hands, they may be subconsciously deeming you inferior. This will probably lead to all sorts of problems in the future. Don't count on it though. It's just something easy to watch for that may give you some clues about the person.

When I shake hands with a prospect that I've just met, I say "Hey! My eyes are up here!".

    Ok, not really.

What I really say is "Hi, They call me The Man With No Name, Claude Whitacre...at your service"

    OK, not really that either.

But I really do do this; I start to shake hands, and then, with my other hand, lightly grab their wrist and control where their hand grabs mine. It's like I'm subtly correcting the way they shake my hand.

I guess you could say it's to position myself as the dominate male...but I never think about it, I just do it. And the real reason I do it? I have a little arthritis in my hand, and I want them to grasp my hand the right way. But I do it all the time. It's just a habit now.

What if they're not stars? What if they are holes poked in the top of a container so we can breath?
