"I don't want to be a marketing guru, I just want to build websites..."

Hey Offliners,

Do you find yourself struggling to pick a niche, vertical or industry that you position yourself in as the go-to expert?

Is it because you're afraid of missing out on a future deal that may be outside that niche?

Well, if so, I want to give you something to think about.

Here it is:

If you've already chosen a field to work in, why not strive to be great and be known for being great in your field by picking a local niche, vertical and industry and dominating it?

Why settle for being just another web designer, graphic designer, marketing consultant etc.?

Will it take some time and effort. Of course. But do you plan on being alive for another 30, 40 or 50 years?

If the answer is yes to that question, then your journey of a 1,000 miles (in this case, being known as expert in your chosen field) should've already started.

I have several relatives that have worked for companies for twenty to thirty years. Which is admirable and to be commended.

However, the sad part of the story is that their company offered tuition reimbursement packages for their employees to go to college and get their degrees and my relatives didn't take one class.

Of course I realize college isn't for everyone, but if you're already working in the field for ten, fifteen or twenty years, why not maximize your time there?

I'm fairly sure that they could've could hired a tutor, mentor, retired executive, intern, graduate or somebody to walk them through any and every obstacle they would encounter by going to college or getting additional certifications.

It's the same thing in your offline business.

If you have plans of trying to make this thing work, then you need to become a expert at one profitable thing to one profitable market.

Don't settle for being just another web designer in your town or city.

Be the only web designer in your town that small business owners in your target niche, vertical or industry think of when they need a professional website that attracts prospects and converts them into leads.

Now, go close some deals,

Chris

I agree you should specialize in a specific industry, top earning professionals almost always do, but I don't agree that you need certifications or degrees to prove your value.

If you've already got them, great. But if you don't, there's no need to spend your time and money on getting them. You can prove your value through your results and testimonials.

It is true that focusing on a specific niche makes marketing easier. If you understand a specific niche, then you know what needs that niche has. This gives a clear starting idea to create a marketing platform. Personally, since I was 10 years old, I have been interested and trained in music. So when I started my online business, I targeted independent musicians.
