Google Local/Brand/Places Update

Hey Warriors

Just checking in with all of you Google Places Marketers. Here is what I have found/noticed over the past few months.

* When creating a new Google Places Account for a business, it takes you to a different platform to edit and optimize the account. It also has connection to your Brand Page as an Option.

* Existing Google Places Accounts can now be managed from your Brand/Local Page and I am seeing almost no reason to optimize the old Google Places Platform anymore. I clicked on one of my clients maps today, it went directly to his Brand/Local Page. Which are one in the same.

Has anyone else noticed these changes and can shed some light or new strategies on optimizing for Page One Results (Top 7)

Thanks Guys/Girls !!! Hope your having an awesome summer....

Looks like you can add all the Photo's on the Brand Page (that got merged with Local Page)

      • Hi guys, just catching up a bit over here.

The new dashboard has gradually been rolling out for a few months now and many old accounts still don't have it.

There is a lot to learn about it and a ton of things have changed. For instance no more custom categories, faster data uploads, no more dual claimed listings and more.

I've done numerous new posts about it at my place and Blumenthal has as well. Same with the Carousel. So there is a bunch of info and analysis out there in both places for those that want to learn more about how it all works.

Bunch of other updates folks may have missed too. For example clicking reviews in the SERPs no longer takes you to the G+ Local page. AND the link to the G+ Local page is missing - NO LONGER SHOWN in the SERPs in most cases. I just posted about that update last week. Looks like Google is largely cutting out the ability to get to the G+ L page and just surfacing more of the local data right in the SERPs, without ever having to go to the Place page.

OK...I just claimed 7 different locations for chain of dentist offices. Here is what I did. Instead of trying to claim the old way. I created a Google Brand Page for each location first. When I put in the phone number of the location, it brought up sometimes several current and old places/maps. I chose the correct one, got phone verification claim and then had to sent up a postcard claim as well. It all went pretty smooth, just waiting on postcards now. Will then optimize and start connecting other directories and citations.

Yeah...I tried going the other way, logging into the old Places Platform. Since EVERY business now needs to create a Brand Page, I thought it was easier to start with Brand Page and then connect with existing Place/Map.

Actually Google's current advice is backwards of that.

At this point they recommend creating the listing at Places for Business ? Google. Brand new listings SHOULD get the new dash. From there you "should" get a button to update to Google+. (But must already have a G+ profile 1st).

If you DON'T have the new dashboard yet, Google says wait to update to G+ until after you get new dash and the new G+ update widget.

Thanks...I never thought to ask Google's advice....haha....my way worked really well to set up these 7 dentist offices. Got several in the postcards in mail this week and everything merged nicely.

Regarding optimization, do you think the whole citations/directories strategy is still as strong? Looks like you can add much more content to profile, images, videos and daily posting for fresh content to the news feed. I would think...that if you got many +1's on the content, that could help move you up on search results.

                  Your thoughts guys and girls??

There is a lot that has changed in the new dashboard such as categories and they are relying much more on other sources like YP.com for categories you will notice some business's ranking for stuff they don't do because of this change. Also a lot of my client's old dashboards have converted over to a new dashboard and became merged listings on there own this will eventually happen with all listings that are capable of having a merged listing. As far as updating and merging I do things much differently but either of the way's you guys talked about will work but I would discourage most business's from upgrading until Google does it for you due to the new category rules it has been known to de-rank some clients. I only do Google Places AKA Local AKA maps or whatever they eventually will decide to call it I also work well with marketing companies and have references from ones I currently do work with, I am very affordable and do an awesome job I also have example screenshots etc.. but I joined this community not just to build my empire but hopefully to exchange tips and tricks with fellow marketers. feel free email me Nathan@ndoseo.com

I admit I'm getting confused. I have my G+ profile and I have a brand page created in association with that profile.

But from previous Google Places, I also have a business listing that isn't associated with my profile and when I click on Places for Business ? Google takes me to the old dashboard for Google Places, which has my active older Google Places page.

    Is that a relic?

    Hi everyone,

It looks like several of you are actively working google+ for businesses. I'm interested in getting back into local business marketing. I want to help clients rank well in the SERPS with their Plus listing. I've been out of the game for quite a while. Can any of you recommend a good and updated course for learning how to best optimize Google+ pages?

    Thank you.

I am calling for it :-) Learnt most of this stuff a while ago, but it is changing quicker than I can keep up. A concise, do this, do that, guide to latest practices would be brilliant.

Tell me about it. I am in the middle of totally revamping my training course. Google has changed so much that even though every course I did I had to totally update - I finally decided to just tear it apart and re-build from the ground up.

But it's taking me too long to finish because I just get one video done, move to video 2 and then things change again and I have to re-do vid 1. It's NUTs.

Once I get the Advanced Google+ Local training finished, hopefully this week, then I'm moving toward a constantly updated training portal with weekly training calls, so as things change I can help all my consultants stay on top of all the changes. Keep having even pro consultants that I trained 8 months ago come to my forum with problems and I have to say "no that process changed - you can't even do that any more - now you have to do it like this!" So hard for busy pros to stay on top of it, so I'm going to try to come up with some way to help them do that.

Sometimes I wish I could just do a brain dump and keep everyone updated about everything I know as it changes, without having to type or talk or create videos. Kinda like when you touch 2 phones and your music transfers instantly. Anyone have a brain dump app? Haha... :p

I have 8 dentists that are clients and 6 of the 8 give me fresh content to post daily and the others don't. I see the 6 that do provide daily content are ranking in 7 pack.

If I could ask for some clarification, I really need it!

Right now, I have a google + personal page but I want to claim a Google + page for my business. Should I claim my Google Plus Local Page Places for Business – Google or Google Brand Page: Google + Business Basically, what Google + pages do you recommend for a business?

I could care less to show my business address, I work from home. I am confused on which page to claim for my business or which order to claim them in.

          Thanks

If you have an existing Google Places Page, the new platform should ask you if you want to merge with a Google Brand Page. You can also create a Brand Page from your personal Google+ Profile and then find your Places page by phone number or address, then you can merge them that way as well.

Since that old way of manually merging G+ and Place pages has always been buggy and especially since Google is in the process of auto-upgrading all Place pages to G+ pages...

Google strongly recommends not doing that old way of manually merging. They recommend waiting until you are auto-upgraded. If you simply can't wait and have the NEW dash with a G+ upgrade widget, then you can set up a personal profile and use the widget to upgrade to G+.

But don't create a separate G+ page and verify to merge it right now.

Let me know if anyone wants proof that this is Google's recommendation and I'll go find the link(s).
