How To Become Locally Famous Overnight

As an offline consultant, wouldn't it be great if nearly every business owner recognized you immediately and knew what you were about before you ever approached them?

Heck, it'd be pretty nice if they approached you, wouldn't it?

Here's a little trick that will make both of those happen...

A bit of a warning: I'm going to give you the WHAT to do, and less of a how to do it. The reason is, I don't want you to get overwhelmed when there is no need to.

If I wrote out every step to this it would look really intimidating, when really most of it is a click here and a click there and you're done...

Now, here's what you're going to do.

You can do this in Facebook or GDN (Google Display Network) for cheap, so I recommend using both for maximum impact.

Seriously, we're talking pennies a click here.

First thing you need to do is create a few banners and write a few ads that promote you and what you do. (Go to Odesk if you can't make your own banners.) Be sure to write these as benefits for your potential clients. Your ads should be about how you're going to help them - not self aggrandize you.

Next start GEO-TARGETED campaigns in Facebook and GDN. Target the area you're willing to work and travel in. Don't pick keyphrases in GDN because you want to be seen by everyone in your area.

In GDN load up your banners, and set your campaign for any placement above or below the fold - you're only paying for clicks so it doesn't matter where you show up... In fact, you want to show up as many places as possible so people see your banners with your good looking mug on it.

In Facebook you can set your campaign to CPM to get the maximum views. Again, your picture should be your face. You're doing this to become a recognizable face after all.

(With the new Newsfeed ads - you have to do those in a PPC setting, but that's OK. It's still cheap and will get lots of views).

Once you've got your campaigns set up with your banners that have a picture of you in it - it's time to direct them to your site.

Personally I like to have a direct response style site that get's people to leave their contact info and what they need help with - but whatever site you have will work.

The important thing is you have re-targeting set up on your site!

Again, don't get bogged down with the "how" at this point. Adding a retargeting pixel to your site is a simple copy and paste.

So what have we done?

You've created 2 campaigns that will make you highly recognizable and instantly famous in your town.

And for those people who are interested in what you offer, they'll click your link, go to your site and be re-targeted around the web.

So if they didn't fill out your contact form, or take some kind of action on your site, they'll see you everywhere they go until they do

If you use Perfect Audience, AdRoll, or GDN's own targeting - you're going to have a very wide reach so no matter where they go - there YOU are.

Congratulations. Everyone in your area now knows your face. Expect to get a lot of "Do I know you from somewhere?" comments. And when you do, be sure to tell them what you do to help local businesses.

Oh, and did I mention - you can charge a fee to do this for local professionals who want to gain exposure?

Sounds like shotgunning as he is building his brand awareness. Like how realtors put their billboards everywhere but this is much cheaper.

I am not too familiar with Facebook Ads.
However, with GDN... The Google Display Network....
      You target by keywords.
You can also target by area.

This is more of a shotgun. As I said, it makes you "famous".

And in this context, famous means getting your face and your business out to as many people as possible.

Business owners will be in this group, but obviously so will a lot of other people.

Ask yourself this, have you ever recommended something that you haven't personally used? Everyone has. And that's another benefit of this.

Maybe a particular business owner doesn't see your ad, but he/she mentions something to someone who has and they say "Have you heard of (you)? I haven't tried it, but it looked like what you're talking about".

...But again, this will hit plenty of business owners. Don't be surprised if you're out to dinner somewhere and the owner says "Hey, aren't you the one who ____" .

Not a bad way to get a conversation started.

That's true, depending on your business, you might want to target an industry instead.

But think of a Chiropractor, a plastic surgeon, or even a politician.

All of them find this beneficial.... Not to mention an ego boost.

There aren't any requirements, but if your site is getting little to no traffic, you're not going to have anyone to retarget.

Love this James....I took longer route years ago, 100+ Videos, 100+ Blogs and branded myself as Internet Marketing and Social Media Expert here in San Diego. I am very well known around town.
I have been running Facebook PPC last 6 months and I use my Page that shows my image instead of my Business Page. Works VERY well...I would say only downfall, is that many people have made up their minds that they can't afford me because of the popular status.

P.S. It also does work well to meet women too...bahaha

Hey James - here you go spouting this method all over - now everyone will try to offer it. I've been selling this to my clients for awhile and they love it.

But - the quote above is not true. In GDN - you have to get 100 people on your retargeting list before your ads start to show. It's much higher for places like AdRoll - I think I remember it was 500 or 1,000.

Hmm... I'm not sure how that works then Dan. Because I have clients who don't get much traffic at all (very expensive corporate product) and the retargeting still work fine. Maybe it's my Engage account that allows that?

I'm not really sure what you mean by this Ryan, if you scroll up, I did talk about my own experience with it; why I like it, how it helps me position, etc.

If you're exacting me to tell you the money I or my clients have made from using this... Respectfully, that's not going to happen.

I have done facebook advertising using the CPM method and I have to say I prefer CPC simply because CPM counts the endless amount of people on facebook who are not typically paying attention or are interested in the advertisements. Ultimately it all boils down to testing, so I would recommend before starting any campaign you have enough time to sit at your computer and track how many actions you're getting from any CPM or CPC campaign.

Certainly it does make you famous at least locally. However if you do not have a way to monetize traffic generated by your campaign it will be a waste of time and money. People forget very easy if they do not have something to peg your brand with the service of product that you are selling.

I think it's a fairly safe assumption people on this forum have a service they can offer.

If nothing else, they can sell a service and outsource the work to someone else on this forum.

There really isn't an average. Different areas with different populations will have different prices, especially if there are other people bidding in the same, city wide, way.

More people bidding will cause the price of clicks and impressions to go up.

The amount it goes up will be based on how many people are bidding and how much they're willing to spend.
