Cops Dealing Doritos at Pot Festival and Your Business

Thought we could talk about something weird that took place in Seattle last weekend. Check this out…

You See...There’s a 22-year-old summer "pro pot festival" on Seattle's waterfront.

Tens of thousands of “stoners” gather to smoke openly, listen to music and gaze at the Olympic Mountains in the distance.

The haze of pot smoke might smell a little more like victory, after Washington and Colorado became the first states to legalize marijuana.

Oh, and the Seattle police didn’t plan on making arrests at the festival this year. Guess what they’ll be doing?

They're handing out Doritos.

That’s Right…The Police Are Handing out Munchies To The Stoners.

"I think it's going to be a lot of fun," said Sgt. Sean Whitcomb. "It's meant to be ironic. The idea of police passing out Doritos at a festival that celebrates pot, we're sure, is going to generate some buzz."

The bags of Doritos have a sticker on it urging people to check out a question-and-answer post on their website.

Anyways, here’s the point:

They had a website that they needed a certain type of person to visit. Their site was about the pot laws and obvious market was the smokers.

The police did go a smarter route. They used the irony of the whole situation to generate major attention.

They also went after the right market with some good bait. But…

Think they overlooked the fact of who their target market was. Do you think most if any of them will remember to check out the site?

Probably not, but at least it generated a “buzz” and that was their goal. Anyways…

You may not have a business dealing with smokers, but you do have an obvious market.

What can you can start doing in your market to stand out and generate attention?

Is it a crazy themed promotion? A news worthy event?

Something you can come up with that will get people talking, but most importantly…

Taking Action.

We'll talk again soon. I gotta run and go grab something to eat now.

You could pass out free rolling papers with a website address listed that has a list of the best reviewed pot sellers in Washington or Colorado. Once they visit the website (If they remember to) you could have various paraphernalia listed for sale as an affiliate.

Remember to print info on the cover and not the papers themselves, so people don't smoke the web address info and thus lose it.

Also, make sure your business is based in Washington or Colorado, so you don't get arrested for selling water pipes like Tommy Chong did.

Exactly. They "kicked the bong over" when it came to generating responses from their efforts. They could've did 100 other ideas and been better off, but they did get the 1st part right which was attention-they just needed to have a better direct response mechanism.

I think the cops got a hold of the brownies at the festival and forgot that they would eat the doritos and chuck the bag. Maybe next year they'll be a little smarter about it.

At least they got the attention they needed and of course, this will be a learning curve for them and they can always try something new next year.

Yup Nate-Like said they got the attention which is the first step but "kicked the bong over" when it came to the delivery of that message to their audience and the direct response. Next year they should throw in some cheap talk voice machines so when they open the doritos it talks to them. This would be hilarious to see if some people thought the doritos were talking and educating them on smoking laws.
