Looks like someone didn't pay the web designer.

Not that I'd recommend this tactic, but I understand the emotions it takes to get to this point.

Well, yeah - it's not really a good tactic, but at the point when you see you won't get your money there's really not much to do. This way you can at least give a good laugh and a warning to stay away to other 'lucky' designers

Great tactic. The web designer is more than allowed to do this to the owner. They obviously took advantage of the web designer and didn't give him the money that he asked for. While we haven't heard both sides of the stories yet, this is still a funny idea and a good thing to remember for those designers who get the clients that don't pay them.

It's pretty funny, but probably not very professional!
Owner shouldn't have possession of the site until payment has been made anyway.

In Michigan, there is a legal concept called 'Work For Hire'. Basically it means that the ultimate website owner doesn't take possession or assume ownership until the final payment has been sent. Technically a web designer should have paperwork signed at the time of the order stating that this is a work for hire project. So, that means until that final payment is received, the designer can do whatever they want with it.

I would try to get to the bottom of the problem to why they are not peying you. Usually that is because they do not like the work that was completed for them, so I would first try to resolve this before doing this move..

This move could backfire on you and make you out to be the bad guy!

If you can not resolve the issue with them, simply sell it to their competitors for a cheap price and win there business and work with them...

Best of luck I been there and done the same thing before and I am speaking from experience....

If this was me, I'd probably just change it to 'Under Contruction' or better yet, change all photos and logos to pictures of cute kittens.

I definitely understand the web designer here. It's not what we call professional but it's funny and it teaches them a lesson.
