Best Answer For "How Did You Get My Number?"

Title says it all...... when I'm cold calling leads from a list that I bought and they ask me "how did you get my number", whats the best way to approach this? I'm sure "i got it from a list I bought" won't fly well.

Lying doesn't work too well either.

Honesty works the best, however you can always be creative. Something along the lines of "Your number came up on a database of businesses that could benefit from xxx"

I prefer and only use the direct response way for myself and clients (back in the day did a lot of cold calling and made a lot of money at it but direct response marketing is much better-where I get them to call me), but if want to cold call...

There's tons of things you can say. Some "ninja ones" but don't want people abusing it so here's one ethical tip off the top of my head real quick and that I've used back in the day...

"I have been doing a lot of research lately, trying to find a business that would not only benefit heavily from working with us, but a business that is looking to build a relationship together.

Mr. Hello I found your business to be on the top of that list and would like to see if maybe we are truly a good fit and if this is worth our time pursuing?"

    This does a few things...

You never really answered his question. You kind of dodge it.

You admitted you can help someone but not sure it's him because there's others on your list

You seem to actually take your time researching people and not just cold calling. Plus...

Even if he wants to hang up on you, he's probably dying to find out at least who you are and what are you talking about. Benefit, Build a relationship? This is your first conversation.

What in the world are you talking about? You're not sure if we want to pursue his business?

You threw him off real quick and Then...

That's when you better have your attention statement and pitch ready and then close that puppy.

There's tons of other ones, but that one is pretty simple.

"I did some research...and put a list together. Here's why I think you're qualified to be speaking with me..."

and go into your 30 second commercial.

If they really don't want to talk, why push them.

This is a way better approach than lying. There are always creative ways to say 'you are on the list' and some of those ways can make people feel important and interested in what you have to say so they may actually stay on the line instead of hanging up.

'You paid to put your company contact information out there as advertising. Well, you're advertising is about to pay off".

That's just me. I'm pretty balsy. Maybe a little more muted like

"You advertise your company, and paid to get your contact details listed. I'm calling to so if I can help you make that advertising more profitable"

These aren't unlisted personal phone numbers. These guys paid to have their contact information included in their online listings.
I approach it like that. I've only had maybe two guys ask me how I got their phone number. Both times I started laughing.

These are businesses that advertising. Their advertising works. That's why you are calling them.

I say it with a slight hint of humor, because I want to covey that their objection is kind of silly. Taking it seriously, gives it weight.

I think I would laugh too. I can't imagine a business asking me where I got their number.

"Sir.... wait....Sir... Did you just ask me how I got your number? When I called I wasn't sure rather I could help your business but now that I know that customers can't find your number it's clear not only can I help but you need my help."

Maybe if I called someone's private line that isn't listed. But then I think he would just be impressed I found it and put that level of effort into talking to him.

If someone said to me "You are calling my private unlisted number" I may laugh a little and say "Then you forgot to turn off your Call Forwarding"

Brian; Something I forgot to tell you when I met you. Never post a better answer than I have.

I can dish it out, but I can't take it.
