"Who has time to convince a restaurant owner to get a website?..."

Hey Offliners,

In my opinion, there is no bigger waste of time than trying to "convince" a restaurant owner that they need a website.

As a general rule in life, I don't spend one minute trying to sell anybody something they don't want unless it's literally life or death.

Of course, I spend the time to learn about them and their business, but if after all of that digging, I discover that they truly don't want a website, I promptly move on.

No bickering. No arguing. No slick objection rebuttals.

I simply move on to what's important to him.

Here's why I handle it that way:

First of all, it may come as a shock to some consultants to learn that a restaurant doesn't necessarily need a website to be successful.

It will definitely help if done and marketed correctly, but by no stretch of any consultant's imagination is it necessary.

All that's really needed for success is for the restaurant to consistently get customers and that's only if they are in the business of maximizing profit.

By the way, some are not.

Secondly, if they don't have a website by now, there could be any number of reasons for that, but ultimately they don't have one because they haven't made getting one a priority.

There are literally thousands of options for website designers, so the only person who doesn't have one, is the person who hasn't prioritized getting one.

Lastly, it's always easier and more profitable to go with the flow when it comes to selling anything.

Especially if I've discovered the reason for not having a website is that they don't really want one.

After all, we're all adults here. You make your choices and I make mine. No harm. No foul.

But, it's important to mention that at that point, I'm doubling down on my initial goal of finding out what their needs, goals and aspirations are for their restaurant and how can I help them achieve those.

With or without the website doesn't really matter to me. My bank account isn't picky.

Just food for thought.

Now go close some deals,

Chris

Good article, Chris. I agree and that's why I think most consultants should go in with
an open mind, and full tool chest of marketing options.

Rather than push one approach (websites) it's better to get enough information to recommend whats best for the business.

In some cases it may not even be something you want to do, and you can refer them to
    someone who does.
...and I like your comment about not wanting to 'convince' people - me neither.

Yup...."why fight City Hall" (an old saying) I go with the "line of least resistance" (another old saying) and.....give them something that will ENHANCE their website!

Like a VIDEO with the Photos that are already on their website!

Grab some photos and place in a folder. If they have some Reviews on "Yelp.com" or "Trip Advisor.com"...intersperse the Photos with Slides of Reviews.

Make up a Video with Windows Live Movie Maker (or PhotoStory3) using their business name as Title. Insert info from their "About" pages into the Description....put the Title into the "Tag" area and upload to your YT channel.

Should be on 1st page of G within minutes. Call or email restaurant telling them to Google their Name and.....collect $250 initially and $50/mo forever!

      Here's an example;

Lesson here: qualify FIRST, sell SECOND. You'll have a much easier time of it by finding people who already agree with how you think before you try to sell something.

Well I have to disagree with this. You can do it later, but not at the beginning.

What if they don't believe they need a website at all? I and my clients have spoken with many people who have survived all this time without a website, and showing them data doesn't matter. They're convinced they don't need one. Showing them "proof" won't help.

What if they don't give a hoot about what their competition is doing? I'm one of those people. I could care a less what my competition is doing: first, I don't think I have any--nobody does what I do the way I do it--and second, I'm too busy improving what I do to care about Keeping Up With The Jones.

So showing them proof or trying to scare them about their competitors is not going to work in these common situations.

Instead, find out whether they believe they need a website or not. And discover whether they follow what their competitors are doing or not.

If they do believe one or both of these things is important, then you can share your evidence. This will lead to much lower stress on your part and better conversions.

I had to quote this. No matter where you are in business you can get further ahead by focusing on making yourself better vs. worrying about where you are in relation to your competitors.

I've seen first hand how often businesses do the opposite and they end up limited their own growth by chasing after a competitor.

Remember if you are always following someone's lead you will always be behind that person. You can't be first by following the leader.

I'm sorry....I learned long ago to...FORGET ABOUT WEBSITES!

When I walk into ANY restaurant and show the owner a Video ...of the BEST RESTAURANT IN TOWN....on my Portable DVD Player......his first response is....

" CAN YOU DO ONE OF THESE FOR ME?"

His 2nd response is; "HOW MUCH?"

And when I tell him "I don't know UNTIL I put it together....at NO CHARGE or OBLIGATION! All I want, now, is your OK to let me take some digital shots.....and I'll make up a Sample and....We Can Go From There!

          So....my "strategy" is NOT to try and sell websites to restaurants HOWEVER....these people have spent LOTS of TIME and MONEY on the INTERIOR of their restaurant BUT.....as I Pound Into Their Heads;

NO ONE SEES THEIR INTERIOR UNTIL.....THEY'RE....INSIDE!

MY Pitch is to make them aware that a VIDEO can....show potential diners WHAT THE INTERIOR LOOKS LIKE!

Anyways.....I gave up on trying to sell Websites to Restaurant Owners, long ago!

They can INSTANTLY UNDERSTAND....what the TOP Restaurant is doing with their Video and.....do they want to do the SAME or not?
