You know, Rus brings up a good point here. What if someone were to make a sign twice as big, but have a nice set of........legs on it. Certainly, that will get some eyeballs (like a thumbnail does in an online ad), but I'd be interested to see how it converts.

        Shockwave,

Let's see...the legs are related to sexiness, right?

And sexiness, has been around since, well.....since
        gee.....um...before the internet. Gulp.

That makes it really, really "old school".

So, nope. There is no way your idea could possibly work.

    Honestly? No

First would you trust your SEO to a guy who took a page out of the yard sale marketing play book?

Second if a business knows what "SEO Services" are he sure can google to find people to provide it.

Third "Google 1st Page". Would you like me to screen cap what I get when I Google "1st Page". And yes that is how the average person will read that. Google is the verb. BTW these guys are #1 for that term. 1st-Page.com SEO Solution | Just One Client Per Market Guess our friend likes advertising for his competitors.

Fourth I googled the number. Which I am sure others would do before calling and the only thing that came up for it company wise is a shoe store in Downer's Grove.

Finally do you really think that someone driving by is going to take the time to actually write the number down if they do happen to understand it and need the service?

I'm not saying he won't get calls and it may be worth the investment since such signs are cheap. But I wouldn't assume he is killing it with the sign. Those signs work best for certain demographics and business owner isn't one of them IMO. Really look at the vast majority of those signs and tell me who they are targeting. And think why that group is targeted by them.

Then come up with an offer and sign that makes sense.

Aaron; Yup. Here's why this type of ad is nonsense.

      How many people a day are driving by that intersection that;

      Are internet marketers?
That want a Google Page One Listing
That have a pen and paper ready to write down the number...or have their cell phone handy
And have stopped so that they can take the time get the contact information.

I'm going to be very generous here..and say that the number of internet marketers that drive by is one per day.
Let's say that the sign grabs the attention of 2% of them...
Now, how many have stopped so they can read the sign and decide if they are interested? Maybe 5% of the 2%.
Now how many of those will have a pen and paper to write down the number...or will call on their call phone? So say (generously) 50% of the 5% of the 2%......

And lets say 100 cars drive by a day. (quick math)

that's .0005 calls a day. And how qualified are they? What kind of a prospect calls for SEO services from a hand made sign in an overgrown lot, by the side of the road?

You know, you could buy a PPC ad for your area for next to nothing...that would really pull a few leads.

      Sorry.

What does work are hand held signs for local retailers....

      Just a thought.

Here's an awesome story that illustrates this exact point

We literally had professional signs that generated almost no calls. Back before marketing I ran a successful real estate business. We always ran professional signs that would cost us several dollars each and in minimum orders of 500. It usually resulted in just a few calls.

One day as a test, we started putting homemade signs on telephone poles and the phone rang off the hook. We literally went from 1-2 calls per week with 500 signs to 40-50 calls per week with 50 signs.

It's similar to your average "yard sale" sign. It pokes you in the eye and when customers have ad blindness, that's just what you need.

Don't be afraid to be different.

Was it "we buy houses"? That calls into the demographic I was talking about. Perfect offer for the signs and I always wondered if homemade worked better than professional.

Curious did you get more calls on Thurs, Fri, and Sat? Curious if my mental theory is correct.

I have a friend who owns millions of dollars worth of residential and
commercial real estate and he always makes his own cheap signs
      with ply and red paint.

He rarely has a property that's empty for more than a week or
two and in the past he's often purchased properties that agents
couldn't rent and filled them very quickly.

It's important in every media to understand that your prospects
      become "ad blind".

Anything that looks like an ad they're used to filtering out.

You want your ads to look like something they can't ignore or
like the content they want to read or watch.

      Kindest regards,

I think some of the offline marketing strategies like yard signs will work. And with the higher prices of good SEO services this sign could produce positive ROI if you were to secure a customers off of it, But here are a few suggestions to help make it profitable.

Is the location of the sign near a business complex or district where it will be seen by business owners?

Perhaps a better headline, one that tells the benefits of being on the 1st page, "Want Customers From The Internet" #602-XXX-XXX. Something like that because only people that are not internet savvy would call from a yard sign about SEO rather then doing an internet search themselves.

I have seen effective sighs that were placed in a sequence on the side of the road that allowed a driver to see 3-4 seo messages on his route. I don't now how effective it is but using multiple signs over just could be helpful.

Based on personal experience "old school marketing" works far better today then it did "back in the day." Why? Because people are too friggin lazy to utilize the myriad of methods including licking a stamp.

As for signs, if the offer is right and they are located in a traffic dense area.....you can crush it. I have generated thousands of dollars selling leads to houses I didn't even own to real estate lenders.

I also know one couple in Boston who pay their mortgage by sticking a for sale sign in their yard. They have NO DESIRE TO SELL THE HOUSE......they do however sell the leads the sign generates.

The very best signs to use based on a ton of personal testing are neon yellow with a black sharpie hand written.

Ugly signs work far better then slick and polished ones....because an "ugly sign" smacks of BARGAIN.

I gave up a long time ago trying to convince peeps on the power of signs....I simply tell the critics, cynics, and naysayers that "they're right." But in fact, they are dead wrong.

      Ugly signs work.

    Hi there,

I wonder if it's the personal touch of the "ugly" signs that makes them more successful? I personally wouldn't call one but then I'm jaded from working in this industry.

It might be that the regular consumer identifies with what appears to be another consumer trying to get ahead.

    Interesting thread

    All the best,

    Sasha.

My theory is it has to do with who these prospects are. Most bandit signs in general are targeted at poor people. Rather they be yard sales signs or "we buy houses". It is aimed at people who don't have much money.

Tie that in with the fact we like people "like us" and buy from people "like us" and you will see the reason those signs appeal is because that is how they "would do it." If they had a yard sale they would make a cheap hand made sign.

It's the reason Craigslist also works for that demographic. It is how they would sell something. Because they even meet you they feel you are "like them".

It's the reason "we buy houses" people should have a cheap old beat up F150 with tools in the back. Even if the only time they drive it is to meet the person who wants to sell the house.

This kind of sign would also work for a very general product or service. Meaning one with a really wide appeal.

Also to give directions as an extended store sign.

This "Be #1 on Google" sign reminds me of an ad I saw in the newspaper from a wholesale hospital gown manufacturer. I actually talked to him about his ad. I asked "How many people in tow n are prospects?"

He said "Four. Two hospitals and two clinics".
I said "Why didn't you just take the buyers to lunch? It would have been cheaper."

So he wanted 25,000 to see his ad, and the best possible result he could have hoped for would be for the four actual prospects to see his ad....and maybe one of them call him.

The human mental process is an amazing thing to observe.

Stuff like that always amazes me. There is a real "he's doing it so it must work" mentality when it comes to marketing.

If you know the marketing is working for him that is fine. But people will just see a guy doing something and never realize that only 1% of his business is coming from that despite the fact 99% of his budget is going to it. So they repeat the same mistakes. For years media sales people have taken advantage of this. "______ is doing ______" is often enough to close the sale. But it doesn't benefit the clients.

I know a guy who hand writes his own bandit signs to sell mattresses. He's put up thousands of them, and he did it for years. I went and visited him out of curiosity. He's selling them out of a warehouse in an industrial district, by appointment. He just recently stopped so I am guessing the new mayor cracked down on him. It was a serious amount of signs, so it was working.

If he tries it with web design, it would be very different than SEO though.

Everyone understands what web design is and it's a 1 second yes or no that fits really well on a bandit sign - do I need a website? Y/N

The problem with the SEO sign is that most people don't understand it. You can't summarize it on a tiny sign that people will drive by in 5 seconds. "Do I need SEO? well.. wtf is SEO.. oh yeah, search engine optimization.. didn't some guy call me offering it for $250 a few weeks ago? I never really got it.."

Bandit signs work really well for services that are instant Y/N.. do I need to sell my house? Do I need to get a haircut? Do I need a 2 for 1 Pizza?

I really have no faith it would work. I'm not into proving negatives. And yeah if it did work I would be finding an SEO partner real fast. I'd close them and have them provide the back end.

Also my metro area is much smaller than Chicago so I don't want that extreme difference to be the reason I say it didn't work. I might do it though just for fun. What is a bandit sign like that these days? $10? That's lunch.

Why limit yourself locally? Do some travel and while you travel put em out. If they're $10/each, $500 gets you 50 signs and chances are you can hit 100K+ each day in drive by traffic. My office gets 17k in drive by traffic each day.

I would probably bet that in 20 cities with 50 signs in each of them you would get a big return on your investment.

Of course... its theory until proven.

I once knew a guy that people paid to place signs like that along roads. He'd take real good care of the signs too, making rounds to make sure they stayed up and clean. His built a nice reputation and as he made more money, he parlayed that into a multi million dollar contract with the NYC transit system placing billboards in subways.

      Old school.
What was he selling? Bandit signs work. We all know that. But have never looked into what works besides seeing the offers that multiple people put up and working backwards to the target demographic.

I have seen these signs in the Chicagoland Area.

I love them. They don't cost much, your initial investment is low, and because they are so NOT the typical sign for "Make Money In Real Estate", you will take notice.

And if someone drives by it more than a few times AND they might be interested in the whole "Google Thing", who knows.

Plus, some people like the idea of a local provider who they could actually meet in person. There are still people in the world who want to meet face to face, and those kind of people may not have a lot of preconceived notions about SEO and what it can do.

It's a great thing ... old school rocks!!

I'd be shocked if anyone called those signs especially with SEO acronym. I owned a mfg company and had IT/software sales call on me, after a couple acronym filled presentations(techies can get 2 in each sentence!) I warned them the first time they use any an tech acronym they are out the door. haha SEO, CRM, ERP, MRP, SAAS, etc......talk to a prospect in their terms and their language. easier life, more customers, efficiency, profitability, etc...

It may not work as much as you would like it too, but how much did this cost him? $10 bucks?

How many business people are driving around town and are obviously misinformed about SEO? Let's say one of them bites. He paid for his campaign, and it's done.
