For the ladies in the room: your thoughts on a skin product

It's been on the back of my mind for a while to launch a skin product which reverses ageing.

Today it struck me what to name it.

I've been using it and here are the results...

I'm 57 years old, worked on farms for 17 years, hand mowed lawns for 11 years and my hands are now softer than women's hands who are 20 plus years younger than me who have never worked outdoors. Callouses on hands and feet have gone. Cracked skin on feet have gone.

Women comment on my soft hands when shaken on a first meeting.

It's a powder that can be mixed with any hot or cold liquid.

Has no taste.

Is this something you would be interested in buying,
or not?

Would love your thoughts.

Thanks in advance.

Ewen

    Hi Ewen,

Don't ALL skin products marketed to women do this? SHOCK!

I think I speak for most of us when I say we will buy anything that makes us look younger, if only in our minds.

Good luck with it! Take the Nike approach - JUST DO IT!

    All the best,

    Sasha.

      Yeah don't they just!

I guess the difference is you ingest it,
not spread it over your skin.

The skin care products if you look at their ingredients,
mostly have the same ingredients with a few variants.

      None have my ingredients.

But wow, I love the name I came up for it!

      Thanks.

      Do you buy these products?

How much would you spend on them Sasha?

        HI Ewen,

My mother was blessed with beautiful skin and I suppose I've inherited it. At 28, I don't use these kinds of products so I'm not your target market but I'm enamoured by the market itself.

        Sasha.

Yes it's declared as food grade, no additives,
      preservatives or fillers whatsoever.

        Okay, you have my attention.

I'm intrigued. I do believe yours would be the first all natural supplement and I agree that women would spend big bucks on it.

There is/was a product sold through home parties that is a three step hand softener and it sold for over $50 and that was at least 10 years ago. I'm not sure if that company is still in business as I haven't been to a home party in ages. Well, except for jewelry, lol!

I do have a question for you though. Does it work on feet as well?

There is a market for soft and pretty feet also. Feet are known as a problem area in the "soft" and attractive skin department for women too.

          Thanks Terra.

It's already sold as a food supplement around the world.

Since it it is touted for it's health benefits,
there has been no one marketing it just for it's
          skin benefits.

Yes it has softened and removed cracks and callouses
          on my feet.

Actually it could be an anti wrinkle supplement too
because it does soften lines on the forehead which is another massive market.

Then there is strengthening of nails and hair.

Hi there Ewen, Very interesting product you have there. Just to re-cap... You have been using this powder already, and have experienced the following benefits for:

            Inner body benefits
            • Arthritis of toes
            • Aching ankles
            • Aching knees

            Outer body benefits
            • Callouses on hands
            • Callouses on feet
            • Cracked skin on feet

            • Lines on forehead
            • Weak Nails
            • Weak Hair

Hope you don't mind, but I just want to get ask questions to understand this a little better.

Did this product soften the lines of your forehead? - and strengthen your nails and hair?

Also, you mentioned that you stopped manual work because it had worn out your body. And that now, after a year of stopping this type of work, you have noticed improvements.

... Do you think that these improvements might in some way be attributed to stopping work, as the body does heal itself?
... Could your special shoes that you were fitted with possibly have alleviated your aching Ankles and Knees, along with your toes?
... I read somewhere [sorry, no source] that the cracks on toenails and other problems related to the feet (athletes foot) are caused by a fungus. Does your product attack this fungus?
... As for the Callouses, as this hardening of the skin in response to strong contact / rubbing against it, would this not start to clear up by itself, simply by stopping tough physical work?

Also, as it is already sold as a food supplement, what conditions does the existing packaging claim to heal?

If this product can heal the ailments you have already mentioned, significantly beyond the body's own ability to heal itself, it sounds Great!
... Tho I appreciate that face wrinkles probably don't vanish, simply by stopping outdoor work.

            Thanks for reading

Yes, I almost commented on this. The more I think about it, I'd probably be 1000 times more likely to rub some on my skin than I would be to taste it.

It's already sold in the USA and other countries around the world
as a food grade supplement for humans and animals.

Just nobody has branded it for young skin.

Any reason I can't do that so long as I don't make
      claims outside the law?

Ewan my advice is you need to find people who have done suppliment selling and get some details.

I know from the things Tim Ferriss has shared over the years that in the US you have to be careful about the FTC and FDA.

It sounds like it works and thus should be pursued. If you invented this you might be best working with a partner who has experience in supplements and vitamins.

If it is just a repackaging try to get with someone who has done it before and get advice.

I have to say it intrigues me. So don't assume only women would buy this though I agree with targeting women first and then repackaging it for men using the experience from women.

There are plenty of contract supplement companies...
I know of one here in Auckland.

I can buy the raw ingredients from a mine in the USA,
just like my sister has done.

My thinking is to get the raw material sent to a contract packaging company
and have the jars sent to Amazon who store, process and ship the jars.

Just not quite sure on what I can say about the product on label and ads to be legal.

Look up Nerium. They are growing fast in network marketing and sell their lotion product for 80 bucks a big fancy pump bottle with a little product in it.

Also Isagenix nutritional just came out with skin care.

If you can establish a premium position and actually deliver good testimonial results, you cannot print money faster than these products.

I owned a company selling skin care products made from seaweed and built up a database of 240,000 before selling it. The company won a few national awards and
generated most of its success via reader offers in the national press, and direct mail.

(sorry don't know how to reduce size of pic)

Ingested products will give you more grief than gels and creams.

Go "niche" and avoid claims. I.e. can you really "reverse Ageing" ?

Get a stand at, and visit several beauty exhibitions, trade shows and expos,
and do your research with people there to get live feedback and what they looking for . You'll get several hundred feedback in 1 - 2 days especially if u ask them in
    groups and reward their input.

What about manufacturing, distribution, and who you're actually targeting with the
    product?

Food for thought. My advice - don't go for ingested products.

    hope that helps.

      Thank you.

The product is a food grade powder that I've been taking.

So I'm kinda stuck on it having to be taken in rather put on skin...
      am I not?

Just see an opportunity to rebrand the basic raw ingredient which I can get
into something which has mass appeal.

So true with them and with big brand cosmetics
      having identical ingredients.

This is presently used more in the realm of folk remedy for animals and humans.

actually nutritional products like this for hair/skin etc...is a fast growing newer category.

my GF just paid $45 for this 4oz stuff. (liquid money!)

You could prob get same benefit w/ flaxseed oil and coconut oil (much cheaper) but who is going to tell a woman that? I'd get a hair dryer thrown at me.

Can you ask her how long that's expected to last for?

Years ago I spoke with a founder of a skin care company who said the raw ingredients in the common brand cosmetics are actually
cost no more than the packaging and labelling.

I'm thinking of selling 3 months supply at a time because
that's a realistic time to see results for the skin.

2 teaspoons a day so not very long.

keep the price high as consumers think it must then be better! liquid gold!

the guy who started this brand did start Aveda, so he's got lots of credibility built up already.

          Smart guy.

I had to read her whole post, I thought she was going to spray it on the cars and wait for the dents to bounce back

I can see it now... "miracle skin cure just discovered in the Australian Outback"

This and the seaweed reminds me of back when I was 18 and sold Equinox International products. They made good stuff, but got shut down by the government for being crooks more or less in how they recruited people to sell. It was one of those mlm's where all the focus was on the signing people up instead of the product.

One thing they sold was a shower head that had a filter on it. It really did make a difference and your skin felt better. Another was a pill that literally made you sick when you lit up a cigarette. They had another one that helped reduce the cravings. They all worked for me. But I preferred smoking and stopped the herbal pills lol

I too, by the way, accept donations for such fabulous ideas j/k

I would be very interested in this product. I was leery about a product that I would have to ingest even though I do take herbs. I am more open to it since you stated that it's already on the market for other conditions.

I am more interested in the cracked heel benefits. I'm a runner and I struggle to keep my feet and heels looking and feeling good. I have used many products and natural treatments, but something that easy really appeals to me. How long after taking the product does one see visible results?

I initially took it for my aching ankles and knees.

I had done 11 years of hard out manual mowing of lawns.
I had to give it up because I had basically worn out my body.

To be honest I don't recall how long it took
to notice the difference in the appearance and pain going

It's been about a year now taking it daily and I can walk freely
      without any discomfort.

No soreness of joints at all now.

Xrays showed I had arthritis in my toes
A podiatrist fitted me out with special shoes and
insoles to keep my feet straight while walking.

That has no doubt helped as well.

      Best,
      Ewen

Sounds impressive even with the help of the special shoes.

I don't have pain from running. I have a problem with very dry feet and cracked heels. It's an ongoing battle to keep my feet in shape. I was hoping that it would help me with that problem.

I think it has potential, but the details need to be nailed down first.

    Ewan, a few questions please!

What benefit does this product have for animals? If you'd rather not disclose, I understand.

I'm not sure why anyone would fuss over something all natural, especially when they'll consume a soda, or worse, a diet soda! :p

You mentioned in the OT about one of the ingredients, and I know it's very good for skin, but only knew about it externally. How or when did someone discover to ingest this? I'm only curious especially since you mentioned folk remedy.

    Aaron nailed it!

    Scenario 1:
Steve: Hey Bob, I've noticed that you're looking a little more "chipper" these days. You're kinda glowing man! What gives?
Bob: Dude! I was out looking at trucks when the wife texted me to stop by the mall and pick her up some of that fancy skin junk she uses. The girl behind the counter was real cute and talked me into buying a jar of it for myself. All I gotta do is smear it on my face everynight. She gave me some samples to soften up my hands and my feet too! (Right now Bob is wondering whether or not to tell Steve about the facial scrub he's been using too!)
    Steve: Um, ok.
Steve stops hanging out with Bob.

    Scenario 2:
Bob's friends all notice that Bob has been looking more "chipper" and they finally ask him about it. Bob tells them that he was talking to a guy at the gym and asked him if he had any suggestions for the callouses on his hands, tells him his wife is getting angry about them. Guy at the gym showed him a pill. Gym guy leans in to Bob and quietly tells him about it making his feet softer and admits that his face is looking younger too.
All of Bob's friends want to know more so they all sneak down to the man cave so no one can over hear. After Bob shows them the pill and tells them where they can get them too, they all grunt their vow of secrecy and crack open a beer.
    Bob's a hero.

Ok, that was silly, but guys are interested in this type of product. I still have not seen anything that really markets to men in skin care.

As for women... you'd be surprised the amount that would rather take a natural pill then spend the hours they do with external products! I myself, am one!

Hope you had a laugh, I've had tooooooo much coffee this morning!

Aside from any regulations, the only thing that will really matter is, does it come in chocolate?

just be careful of any medicinal claims or implied medicinal benefits

Also be careful regarding any active ingredients

as many regulatory bodies around the globe are getting stricter and stricter regarding claims, labelling etc. (Especialy here in the UK)

It's either Glucosamine, Chondroitin or MSM..actually it's MSM, Methylsulfonyl-methane commonly found in joint health supplements at stores like GNC and The Vitamin Shoppe

MSM (METHYLSULFONYLMETHANE: Uses, Side Effects, Interactions and Warnings - WebMD)

Damn It took reading the whole thread to figure that out, unfortunately I just happen to be a health nut

Anyway yes now that I know what it is you could probably sell it as a product why not. It has a bunch of other supposed uses as well. The only one there is evidence for besides you and your feet/hands is Osteoarthritis though.
