Can someone tell me if this is part of Google Places?

See pic -- does the strip of business listings across the top appear as a result of these businesses utilizing Google Place/Plus? If so, can it be optimized just like anything else? Otherwise, what dictates whether or not some businesses show up and others don't? Reviews and ratings? Why some categories and not others? If anyone can direct me towards more info on this, or what it's even called, I'd sincerely appreciate it. Thanks!

This is Google open graph. It appears for certain industries only, for now.

Wow, I've been out of touch for a while. Seems like this would overshadow and overpower adwords and even actual websites, no matter how much SEO has been done or how high up on page 1 you are. I see after doing a few seraches that my attention goes straight to that strip, then ya start scrolling, not down to other google results, but to the right... staying on the strip. Never mind the businesses listed below the strip. Wow.

I also see it's not there for all business actegories. Maybe just a matter of time?

Will this render typical SEO services for local business sorta worthless?

Everyone will want to be 1st on the strip. Can you imagine hundreds of doctors, attorneys, dentists, etc vowing for that position?

Yeah, kinda overtakes everything, huh? Biz will have no choice BUT to register with Google. Not that anyone wouldn't, but again, no choice. Wow. Are the review google-only, or are these reviews taken from several sites? Off to investigate...
