How to Market Personal Security Products?

So, I lost my job with my local police department 2 months ago (wasn't the right fit) and have been looking for another position elsewhere since then, particularly in sales and marketing (want to learn as much as I can so I can apply it to my own business). I’ve ultimately decided that I being a “cop” (I was in a training program to become one) is not something that I would be very good at and feel that I can contribute to society and my community a lot more by selling crime prevention products.

I have had an online business selling non-lethal personal protection products since October of last year. Problem is, I pretty much spent all of my money trying to have a web site designed and on other things. Totally wasted it all (yay for my first entrepreneurial experience). I am at the point where I completely just want to get out into my community and market my products. I have done far too much thinking and have taken little action since the inception of my business. Now I think it’s time to change that. This is honestly something I want to do full-time, but considering that I have no personal cash flow at the moment…not applying for jobs is not an option.

Now that I FINALLY have a car, I can easily get around town to meet with people. My plan right now is to get car magnets made for my car so that I can advertise on the road. The next step is determining which markets to approach and how. My main markets are single women, college students, and the elderly. Locations to target would be apartment complexes, college campuses, and retirement homes. Because I have a relationship with my local police department, I was thinking of trying to market stun gun flashlights (I don’t believe there is a departmental policy restriction on the type of flashlights one can carry on-duty) to police officers as well.

I live near the University of Minnesota, which has a HUGE number of students. My issue is…how would I market to them without having to pay? Could I get a marketing club to distribute flyers or something? Maybe speak with a representative of the Women’s Group on campus? There are also a few smaller community colleges around as well. This would probably be my best place to target, but I’m worried about advertising costs (I barely have any funds at the moment to do any large campaigns).

One idea that I thought of is canvassing in neighborhoods that experience high levels of crime, like robbery. Our police department provides crime mapping data every week for each respective precinct (representing each section of the city), showing all the types of crimes committed and where. A direct mail campaign would work, but this would be too expensive. I would like to experiment and see if taking a personal door-to-door approach might work well or not.

I had flyers designed quite a while ago and had plans on going to businesses and posting them on bulletin boards. I had them posted in about 6 businesses, but that was months ago. The problem I see with just posting flyers is that it seems too passive of a marketing strategy. Should I be handing these out (mind you, these are high quality and expensive; was $100 for just 200) to people or should I write up a simpler flyer, print it out in black/white and hand them out? What about when canvassing?

Here is my website:

www.srselfdefense.com

I have several products that I still need to add (and remove the wholesale section), but I feel that I need to just leave that alone for now and just GO OUT and start talking to people. That has been my main problem…too much thinking, little action. My idea was to go the ecommerce route, but I feel that utilizing my website via offline marketing would be much better and bring in sales a lot quicker that doing SEO and writing articles.

Here are some marketing plans that one of my suppliers recommended for his distributors, which I’d like to take advantage of:
  1. Set up route of gun stores, pawn shops, and independent hardware stores! (go offer to sell stores some my products)
  2. Fundraising (using products to raise money for churches, civic groups, etc.
  3. Become an internet marketing mogul! (ecommerce, secondary plan)
  4. Business-Business (secondary plan, for surveillance products mainly)

So if you were me, what kind of step-by-step process would you take with this (this is where I’m struggling, because I don’t have a business plan or anything)? And especially with little to no capital (or a job at the moment, for that matter)? Crime prevention is my ultimate passion. THIS is how I want to help people; not by being a cop, but by being a provider to people in my community. This is what I want to dedicate my life to. I just need help getting things off the ground.

THANK YOU!!

Did you implement my basic flyer plan to put them up
in backpacker hostels targeting women travellers?

Develop an informational campus safety presentation. Do presentations on campus and to sorority houses.

These type of products are great for social media and home parties. Have a female host a party, invited a few friends, family, co-workers and pay her a commission or let her earn free products proportionately to sales.

      Hi Ewen,

No, as I said I've only been in a few local businesses...and that was many months ago. With my last job I barely had any time to focus on this. Would you suggest motels or hotels? Or both?

      @NewParadigm,

I'm honestly not good in front of large groups of people. My public speaking sucks (which I'm hoping will improve over time). Much more confident than I used to be, but I would have problems remembering information (if it was a powerpoint or something). Should I join Toastmasters in the meantime? Or at least avoid huge presentations, like the entire campus?

      @Rus

      I have one.

      https://www.facebook.com/srselfdefense

I'd like to get back to doing social media and writing articles, but my main emphasis is GETTING OUT THERE in public and speaking with people while at the same time looking for another job...only so much time on my hands.

Yes, but looking back at that post I was totally clueless in WHO or WHAT to target. Not only that, I got so wrapped up in my police job that I absolutely had no time whatsoever to get involved in my business (not only that, my employer wanted me to shut it down...so how could I adequately advertise without drawing attention?).

Also, a big part of the problem back then was the fear of going out and talking to people. Now I'm far more confident and feel that I'm able to do that now. So, there really is a difference between now and then (scope of a year).

Regardless, I understand what you mean.

      Thanks for your honesty.

So going back to my suggestion when you last came here for help,
it's more the obvious option now.

If you can come up with a few bucks and photocopy,
on black ink, the flyer I gave you and post it in backpacker
      rooms notice boards.

Have the phone numbers spread along the bottom of the
flyer and cut between each number so the buyer can tear it off and call you.

Don't send them to your website.

Don't use the fancy color design.

Do use the ad I gave you.

      Best,
      Ewen

        Honesty is the best policy!

I have colored paper, so this would work pretty well I think. I'll make a list of all the motels, hostels and hotels in the area and see if I can post flyers up.

        Thanks!

Also, my local Gun & Carry organization got in touch with me earlier today and personally invited me to their self defense and right to carry vendor expo that they're in the process of organizing. I'm planning on going, but I need to see if someone I know is willing to go (and determine the costs). I was also invited for free to a large community event, where they have a table that I share with them. This is great exposure!

Alright, so I've been thinking of doing things this way:

    As an example,

Week 1: Advertise with flyers (using well-designed flyer and a simple flyer, with just text; businesses such as coffee shops, barbershops, )
    Week 2: Residential canvassing
Week 3: Apartment and retirement home canvassing
Week 4: Business canvassing (such as salons, apartments, martial arts businesses, gyms, and even restaurants/bars)
Week 5: Set up routes (gun shops, motels/hotels, pawn shops, independent hardware stores)
    Week 6: Local Police Department/Sheriff's Department/Security Companies
Week 7: Contact organizations for fundraising opportunities and flyer distribution (churches, schools, fraternities/sororities)
    ...etc

Now, for placing flyers...I have a dilemma. Should I go to different sectors of Minneapolis (there are five precincts) and just hit everything that is relevant OR should I just pick a precinct for one week and hit motels/hotels on one day, restaurants/bars on another day, coffee shops on another, etc? And then pick another precinct for a different week? I'm thinking this makes more sense, logistically.

Another problem is that I have private security work to do M-F from 5-9, the IDEAL time to go canvassing in residential areas. Should I just go earlier in the day, until about 4 during these periods?

Is this a good marketing strategy?

If it were me, I'd try to learn as much from this site as you can...

Be Your Own Boss. Own Your Own Business!

They've been one of the leaders and top sellers of security/self-defense products that I can remember.

I don't remember if it was Corey Rudl's old Secrets to Their Success site or if I saw them in one of Matt Furey's Inner circles... but this site is raking it in.

They use direct response in all their marketing... so it may be worth checking out what they're doing.

      .
Going to that site made me realize what was bothering me about your flier and facebook page - you keep showing the bad guys and it looks pretty scary.

Yes that is the reality of what is going on but the trouble is that people are conditioned to see the end-user in the ad, not the 'problem' in the ad.

For example, if my service was fixing wet basements, instead of showing dungeon-like basements dripping with mold I'd show a helpful smiling service guy with positive ad copy.

People are already scared, they need to see an image of you as the good guy, not pictures of guys in masks, because the instinctual reaction for female college students, etc. is "stay away"!

You may want to consider selling on ebay and amazon. I used to sell security products on ebay. I made good money specially with taser guns. However, it's illegal in some states so my market was limited. Good luck!

    Haha, we're neighbors.

I think self-defense courses through community ed programs would be a great way to establish relationships with your market. Since you seem to be focusing locally, take advantage of cable advertising and radio. Find out about any events in which you could take part, such as Bill's Gun Shop and its semi-annual gun show.

Have you seen the weekly map of gunshots on the Hennepin County website? North Minneapolis is basically a big red blob of gunshots. You might be able to have links on your site or use the graphics in your advertising.

I like your idea of talking with the local campus clubs. They have access to things that you may not be able to access, without getting in trouble with the university. St. Thomas and other campuses would be good too. How about the neighborhood watch groups? North Minneapolis comes to mind especially. Stay at home moms, single parents, even late shift waitresses and bartenders could have an interest.

On your advertisements, you may want to show a potential victim stopping the bad guy using one of your product types, such as pepper spray.

It wouldn't hurt to contact the local media and see if you could discuss personal safety, during one of the morning programs. Is there a personal safety month? Is there a particular time of year when crime happens most? How about now, with students returning to school and how to keep them safe? The parents of these students may have a particular interest.

There's probably no reason you couldn't sell most of your products throughout the US. *Keep in mind that soon you will have to deal with the 9600+ different tax jurisdictions, not to mention any local ordinances that may be an issue for some of your products.

Oh, and absolutely use social media.

    Hi there,

When I was in America earlier this year, I attended a lawyer's convention where some fellow (I don't recall his name) came in and did a live demonstration of stun guns and tasers. He did it using foil boards and used members of the audience to come up and try it for themselves.

I do recall that after the demo he sold quite a few items and I know the demo was profitable for him.

If you don't like talking to large groups, then just do a demonstration for them. Sparking tasers and loud stun guns make an impression.

    All the best,

    Sasha.

I sold alarm systems for years and made a lot of money for a fortune 500 company .
I had the highest closing ratio ever in the comp along with the record for the largest check ever written to a sales rep for 2 week period ...

What I would do is scare tactics ..
    Give them the crime statistics..
4 out of 5 murders happen when a home owner interrupts a burglary...

Every 7 second a house is broke into in the US.
    And so on...
    Works like a charm...

Also target your prospecting buy where the crime has already happed..
In other words canvas a neighbor hood where there just was a bunch of break ins or other crimes.

This is what the big boys in the industry do ...
Also be the first to sign up new businesses ..Leave cards on for lease buildings and so on...
