Has anyone used marketing skills to get a job you wanted?
Everyone knows that applying to jobs that are listed is the worst way. You are competing with others and you have little power. However if you can set yourself apart from the other applicants or get them to create a job for you it is so much better.
A few months ago I happenned to see an ad for a marketing postion for a growing company that said you could work at home. I haven't worked for anyone else for a long time but the company was doing some cool things and the pay was decent so I thought I would talk to them.
I had the normal pre-screen phone interview then had a 2nd interview with the owner on skype. Before I had the 2nd interview I went to their website and recorded a video showing 10 different ways it could be improved and gave him some other ideas how to improve their print ads and emailed it to the owner. The video blew him away he was very impressed to say the least.
It came down to me and one other person who turned out to be local to the company headquarters. The owner told me later that just made sense to choose the local guy since he was qualified also. That's ok I still wasn't sure I wanted the job even if they offered it but the main thing I learned was how much of an impression we can make in the hiring process using the marketing skills we use to get clients.
So has anyone used their marketing skills to get a marketing job they wanted (or had a job offered to them that wasn't listed?) What marketing did you do?
