I'm Doing It Wrong, Insight Appreciated

I got started in web design way back in 2000. I made a good income with it for a long time. Unfortunately I did not insist that my clients host with me and as a result I did not build up any passive income. I'm really kicking myself over that right now.

If you get anything from this thread it should be the lesson that you should always insist that your web design clients host with you. Explain to them that the hosting income is your retirement plan. Charge them more if they won't host with you.

A few years ago I was in a bad accident. I suffered brain damage and I have severe chronic pain. I don't sleep much because of the pain. Between the pain (which is very distracting), the constant exhaustion from sleep dep and the brain damage it is very hard for me to get anything done.

Over the last few years everything I try to do to make money fails. I have slowly lost everything. At this point all of my possessions fit in a pack and I am surfing couches. I'm desperate to figure SOMETHING out.

I have a server set up to offer fully managed WP hosting and I was thinking if I could get 100 hosting clients at $10 a month each then I could move somewhere with a really low cost of living like Nicarauga and be fine. Maybe over time I could build the income to a few thousand dollars a month and be able to afford to live in the states again.

That's where the trail goes cold. How do I get these clients?

I thought I could offer simple websites for free if people would host with me. But there is no such thing as a simple website. Clients don't submit their content, they want to nitpick over design, they want to use horrific logos from 1997. I don't have the spoons for this.

I thought about outsourcing but that involves sorting through all the crappy outsourcers until I've built a team of good ones. I did that way back when, in my other life before the accident, and I know the work involved. I don't have the spoons for that.

I thought about just randomly asking people to move their site to my host. That just seems...weird.

I've thought about trying to offer some other type of service besides hosting. SEO, social media management, reputation management, video marketing, etc. The learning curve is high and I don't have a lot of extra brain juice. The maintenance energy is also high and I don't have a lot of spoons.

I write well and when my arm doesn't hurt I enjoy writing. I haven't been able to find anybody willing to pay an American living wage to content writers, though and there isn't much opportunity to produce passive income. I should probably try to launch and monetize a blog but again...spoons.

I'm just stuck. I could use some feedback. Cool ideas/systems that I haven't thought of will definitely be considered but keep in mind that I have very limited energy and its hard/slow for me to learn new things. So please keep any suggestions limited to simple and effective strategies.

Also, if any of you are interested in fully managed Wordpress hosting (complimentary hardening of your install, routine security scans, backups, database optimization and upgrades) for $10 a month, please get in touch. If you PM me please include contact information in your message. I don't think I can respond to PMs yet.

Hey Man, sorry to hear about your struggles. But I honestly don't think hosting is your solution but you're on the right track about setting up recurring income and there's many options for that.

    1. Rent a site model - You've already designed websites, this would be an easy transition. You could find a few industries you like, create some "templates" that you could use again & again, with minor changes. Charge $50-$100 (or more) per month to rent it out & customize it.

    2. Social Media - There is a HUGE demand for this service, especially social media management on the cheap. All you need is to come up with 1-2 engaging posts per day for 1 month (totaling 30-60 short posts) and then use a tool like hoot-suite to automate the posting each day. I've got many clients paying $100-200 per month just for this service, and it's SUPER easy and clients find a lot of value in this.

    3. SEO - But, unless you know what you're doing, or willing to outsource it to a reliable SEO service I wouldn't advise this. You need to be able to produce results for your clients, or you will put your reputation on the line. But the good thing is you can charge a pretty good money for this service, as long as you deliver on results.

    4. Provide blog management. Most website owners KNOW that blogging is good for their business, but that doesn't mean they want to actually write content for it. You can easily make $50-$100 each month by having a few articles written & upload them to their blog.

    Hope this helps!
